All questions carry equal marks
Discuss in brief the principles of surveying.
Describe the different kinds of chains used for linear measurements. Also, explain the method of
testing and adjusting a chain.
What are the different sources of errors in chain surveying? Also, distinguish clearly between
cumulative and compensating errors.
The paper of an old map drawn to a scale of 100m to 1cm has shrunk, so that a line originally
10cm has not become 9.6cm. The survey was done with a 20m chain 10cm too short. If the area
measured now is 71.sq.cm, find the correct area on the ground.
Write about the differences between prismatic and surveyors compass.
The following bearings were taken in running a compass traverse.

At which stations do you suspect local attraction? Find the correct bearings of the lines.
Discuss with neat sketches, various methods of orienting the plane table.
Define the following (i) Local attraction (ii) True bearing (iii) Magnetic declination
(iv) Isogonal lines (v) Aclinic lines.
Describe the height of instrument and rise and fall methods of computing levels and also discuss
the merits and demerits of each.
The line of sight from two stations A and B just grazes the sea level. If the height of A and B
above sea level are 150 and 200 m respectively, find the distance between A and B. (diameter of
earth=12880km)
Explain how the procedure of reciprocal levelling eliminates the effect of refraction, curvature
and improper line of collimation
The following notes refer to reciprocal level taken with one level.

Find the True R.L of Q, combined correction and also angular error in the collimation
adjustment.
Discuss various methods of interpolating contours.
The formation width of a road is 10m, and the side slope of the cutting is 1:1 and for filling is
2:1. The transverse slope of the ground is 1 in 5 (fall). The sections are 50m apart. The depth of
excavation at the centres of the two sections are 0.50 and 0.70m respectively. Find the volume of
cutting and filling.
Write briefly about the visual interpretation of aerial photographs.
Explain briefly applications of EDM. Also, add a note on main classes of EDM instruments and
errors.
