A. Read the following text carefully. Then answer the questions below. Write complete
sentences and use your own words as much as possible.
Wales
Theres a lot of confusion whether Wales is a part of Britain or not. Twelve hundred years ago, it was an
independent country. Most of the people who lived in Wales then were Celts. They were the original inhabitants of
Britain before the Vikings (from Scandinavia) and the Normans (from France) drove them into the distant corners of the
island. The people who lie in Wales today are very proud of their Celtic history, culture and language. But as far as
politics are concerned, the Welsh have exactly the same status as the English and the Scottish. They vote for
members of Parliament who sit in London.
There is a strong Welsh Nationalist movement, which wants the country to be independent from the rest of Britain.
However, in a referendum two years ago, a majority of the Welsh people said they didnt want independence.
The Welsh language is taught in schools, and government documents and road signs must be written in both
languages. A lot of poetry is still written in Welsh, and there is a national festival of poetry and music each year which
has been held for centuries.
From time to time, the Nationalists carry out acts of terrorism to protest against the English domination of Wales.
They have burnt down holiday homes belonging to people who spend most of the year in England, and they have blown
up pipes bringing water from the Welsh lakes to English cities such as Birmingham. Since the referendum, however,
most Welsh people condemn these acts. They are more concerned with improving life both in the remote parts of the
country and in the industrial cities of the South.
(from Club series 20 adapted)
1. Has Wales been always a part of Britain?
2. Who were the first well-known inhabitants of this region?
3. What are the Welsh very proud of?
4. Can they choose their representatives in Parliament? Account for your answer.
5. Which are the languages spoken in Wales?
6. Do the nationalists like to be dominated by the English? Why do you say so?
B. According to the above text, some of these statements are false. Make them true, please.
1. Wales was invaded by Continental peoples.
2. The Welsh Nationalist movement is very weak.
3. The referendum proved that only a minority of the Welsh wanted to be independent.
4. An important festival of poetry and music has been held for the last two years.

TEXT:
Harrison Ford has starred in three of the latest and most successful films: "Star Wars", The Empire Strikes Back"
and "Raiders of the Lost Arc".
But success didn't come to him overnight he had been an actor long before the first of the three films had crowds
around cinemas all over the world, and, meanwhile he had to work as a carpenter for eight years.
Here is an interview with him:
REPORTER: Well, Harrison, tell us something about your early life.
HARRISON: I was born in Chicago in 1942, went to Ripon College in Wisconsin
REPORTER: Did anyone or anything influence your decision?
HARRISON: No, I don't think so. My ambition had always been to do actor's work. I thought it would be fun to do
different things all the time, to go to different places.
REPORTER: Was it easy for you to enter the world of cinema?
HARRISON: On the contrary, it was very difficult.
REPORTER: But you are a very successful actor
HARRISON: Well, but before that I had to become a carpenter for eight years. I built furniture.
REPORTER: How interesting! Did you stop acting then?
HARRISON: No, in fact I still acted but only in roles I really wanted to play.
REPORTER: Was the role of Han Solo in Star Wars one of those?
HARRISON: Yes, but I had to wait a long time before I was offered the role. I was enthusiastic about that comicbook character and I tried to make it seem real. I think I succeeded.
REPORTER: Of course you did! The film's massive success owes a lot to your work. And what about the films that
followed?
HARRISON: Well, I tried to play characters who were more real, but they all flopped. The public obviously wanted
me to be a man of few words with strong fists and an ironic sense of humour. Nothing else.
REPORTER: A similar character to Han Solo was Dr Indiana Jones, the hero of Raiders of the Lost Arc. What do
you think of that film?
HARRISON: Well. I enjoyed doing it and the film has been a hit all over the world.
REPORTER: If you stopped acting what career would you choose?
HARRISON: I think I'd become a carpenter again. I love it.
REPORTER: Any plans for the future?
HARRISON: I intend to go on with my career as an actor and play only the roles that I really like.

The best way to see London or any other city in the world is on foot, but there are other popular ways of going from
place to place: by bus, tube or taxi.
Although Cristina comes to London every evening, she has no time to see the sights. This is why she asked Sarah and
Robert to take her to the places she has heard so much about. It is Saturday morning. After they got off the train at St
Pancreas, Sarah and Cristina met Robert at Piccadilly Circus.
CRISTINA: Why are there always so many people hanging around here?
ROBERT: Well, most are tourists and no tourist can say he has been to London, unless he has been in the middle of
Piccadilly!
CRISTINA: Hey, look! Where's the statue of Eros?
ROBERT: Don't panic! It's being repaired in Edinburgh.
SARAH: Really? I didn't know myself. What's the matter with it?
ROBERT. The age, of course. It was put up in 1892 and now an ankle was broken, one of the knees was cracked and
that sort of thing.
CRISTINA: Yes, I remember the first time I passed the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben was being repaired. It was
covered with some kind of cloth.
ROBERT: Yes, they do it now and then.
SARAH: It's like us going to the doctor
CRISTINA: Yes, you're right. And now what's the next stop?
ROBERT: Trafalgar Square.
CRISTINA: Don't tell me that the Column and Nelson's Statue are being repaired, too
ROBERT: No, not this year. But I heard that next year, the patina, dust and stains, you know, will be washed off, too.
CRISTINA. What's the quickest way to Trafalgar Square?
SARAH: Well, walk down Heymarket and get to Trafalgar Square in 10 minutes. Come along, Cristina. It's time to feed
the pigeons.

With a good teacher, you can learn the basic techniques of windsurfing in a weekend. The you buy or borrow a
sailboard and you sail. At first you fall in over and over again until the first time you manage to keep your balance on
the narrow board for a few hundred metres without wrapping yourself in the sail. There comes the day when you feel the
board is an extension of your body and the sail spreads out above you like a wing, and it all seems effortless.
Windsurfing was invented in the sixties by two Californian surfers, Schweitzer and Drake. Schweitzer noticed that
on days when the waves were not high enough to surf, there was often a strong wind and he set about finding a way to
use it. Gradually he and Drake refined this idea into a basic design for a sailboard a surfboard holding a mast and a
triangular sail which could be turned in any direction. In 1984 about nine thousand sailboards were sold in Britain. Apart
from the excitement windsurfing is cheap and easy to begin. You need very little equipment and to be fit.
1. Answer these questions in your own words:
a. When you start windsurfing, which are the main difficulties you have to face?
b. How did Schweitzer and Drake discover the sailboard?
c. What's a sailboard like?

Julie, 18, from England, planned her "year out" when she was 13. She wanted to work in France as an assistant in a
school. As she got older she arranged instead with a local foundation to spend her"year out" helping in local schools,
their assemblies, Christian Unions, and working with pupils with special needs. But, when it came to it she felt she
wanted to be living away from home and felt guided to serve as a volunteer in "Operation Gideon".
For 14 per week plus food and accommodation she worked 6 days a week in a team of fouryoung people in
Norwich. The work was with a church, youth clubs, a Christian coffee bar, and runnin a "latch key club" for children
whose parents get home at 6 p.m., yet school finishes at 3 or 4 p.m. Julie loved living in the house of a church member,
and she gained lots of confidence especially in meeting new people. "If you do a year out", she says, "you are stepping
out of your comfort zone, but with Operation Gideon, if things went wrong there were always members of my team there
to give support."
"Did it help your studies later?" I asked. "Yes. I've always wanted to train as a teacher. My yearout was working a lot
with school kids and other young people. Some give you hassle, but if yourespect them, they respect you. I've built up
useful strategies for dealing with people."

It`s not very common to hear such statements.People usually differentiate between classical music and pop music as

In my opinion this is a great mistake.I think that to like or dislike this or that kind of music depends mainly on the
musical education of people.Sometimes you don`t like it because you can`t understand. And I do agree that it`s easier to

MAKING MONEY AFTER SCHOOL
HOW TEENAGERS CAN EARN EXTRA CASH
When classes are dismissed at 2:15 p.m. Steve, a sixteen-year-old school junior, heads not for home nor the
athletics fields nor club meetings, but to a local fast food chain store. There he changes into his uniform and spends the
next three hours as a short order cook, turning out dozens of hamburger variations for his schoolmate patrons. Already
he has spent over six hours in school classes and faces several hours of studying after dinner. He maintains a B
average but if his grades fall, he will have to quit his job or risk rejection by the good colleges. Including weekends he will
probably work twenty hours a week and earn at least $3.35 per hour, the legal minimum wage.
Steve is typical of an estimated 3,146,000 young people aged sixteen to nineteen employed in the part-time labour
force.
Why do so many students work in their free time?
Some want to explore possible careers or improve their skills. Some are bored with the narrow routine of student life
and want to expand their horizons. Athletes work to build stamina and muscle.
Money is, of course, the main reason students work. Earning generates self-esteem and independence. Some
teenagers must contribute directly to family income. Others must pay for their clothes and other expenses. Teenagers
have a variety of spending priorities but cosmetics, clothes, electronic equipment, snack food, books, magazines and
records, sports equipment, vacations, musical instruments and recreation are prominent in the list.

Work...To many people even the word sounds horrid! And not necessarily because they are lazy.
The same man who hates his job in the factory,or even in the office, may work hard at the weekend, painting the
house or digging the garden.
What is the reason then?In most cases,it is because these people simply do not enjoy the job they are doing. It does
not give them any real satisfaction. The job may be easy, like making up cardboard boxes;it may even be well-paid;but it
is boring.
Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part of a much larger one, like attaching a door handle to a
car.But the part they actually play in making the car is so small that they can never say:I have made something.
Yet in modern society somebody has to do these jobs because it is the way work is organised.

Read the following text and decide which of the following statements are TRUE or FALSE.
A fiction writer is a person who invents stories. But how does one start out on a job like this? How does one become a
full-time professional fiction writer?
Charles Dickens found it easy. At the age of twenty four, he simply sat down and wrote Pickwick Papers, which became
an immediate best-seller. But Dickens was a genius, and geniuses are different from the rest of us. In this century just
about every single writer who has finally become successful in the world of fiction has started out in some other job.
(Alice in the Wonderland was written by a mathematician). The first attempts at writing have therefore always had to be
done in spare time, usually at night.
The reason for this is obvious. When you are adult, it is necessary to earn a living. To earn a living, you must get a job.
You must if possible get a job that guarantees you so much money a week. But however much you may want to take up
fiction writing as a career, it would be pointless to go along to a publisher and say, I want a job as a fiction writer. If you
did that he would tell you to buzz off and write the book first. And even if you brought a finished book to him and he liked
it well enough to publish it, he still wouldnt give you a job. It is very common for a hopeful fiction writer to spend two
years of his spare time writing a book which no publish will publish. For that he gets nothing at all except a sense of
frustration.
If he is fortunate enough to have a book accepted by a publisher that will earn him maybe a thousand pounds. Most
novels take at least one year to write, and one thousand pounds a year is not enough to live on these days. So you can
see why a budding fiction writer invariably has to start out in another job first of all. If he doesnt, he will almost certainly
starve.

Students from a London Comprehensive School speak about "discipline" and "what makes a good teacher".
DISCIPLINE
ALISON -- There is a lack of discipline here.In the first three years,it`s not too bad.
They keep you tight. It goes haywire in the fifth form.
JACKIE -- They never told us the school rules. We only found out when we did something wrong.
SOPHIE -- Discipline depends a lot on the teachers. Some of them love to discipline the
whole school. They scream at you for little things. They take themselves
quite seriously.Other teachers don`t care at all.
MICHAEL- There should be discipline in a school -- the right kind of discipline.Often you
get told off at the wrong time,in the wrong place and for the wrong thing. You
really get fed up.So when something important comes up,you think it`s the
same as everything else and you carry on.You can`t tell the difference between
what matters and what doesn`t.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER
JACKIE -- A good teacher treats you like an adult.
MARISA - A good teacher is a pusher -- someone who makes you work. You resent it
at the time, but you end up thinking you`re glad you have that teacher.
ALISON -- I don`t know what makes a good teacher.I think it`s someone who understands
your feelings and respects your opinions -- as he expects you to respect him.
SOPHIE -- A good teacher talks to you and advises you every day and is always helpful.
MICHAEL-Teaching is a hard job,but teachers have chosen to do it.My parents always say
they`d hate to be my teachers!Teaching isn`t easy, but teachers have to care
because they are messing around with people`s lives. They must think of the
people involved.A bad teacher can do a lot of harm.

TEXT:
Summerhill is the name of a small school in England, but it signifies a great
experiment in education. Its founder, A.S.Neil, has proved one simple truth:
-- Freedom works.
In a way, the old school spirit symbolizes all that discipline stands for.
The headmaster of a large boys' school said to me not long ago when I asked
him what sort of boys he had, "The sort that goes out with neither ideas nor
ideals".
At Summerhill we treat children as equals. By and large, we respect the
individuality and personality of a child just as we would respect the
individuality and personality of an adult, knowing that the child is
different from an adult. We adults do not demand that adult Uncle Bill must
clear his plate when he dislikes carrots, or that father must wash his hands
before he sits down to a meal.
Children brought up under the wrong type of discipline live one lifelong lie.
They never dare be themselves. They become slaves to established futile
customs and manners. They accept their silly Sunday clothes without question.
For the mainspring of discipline is fear of censure. Punishment from their
playfellows does not involve fear. But when an adult punishes, fear comes
automatically. For the adult is big and strong and aweinspiring. Most
important of all, he is a symbol of the feared father or feared mother.
The future of humanity rests with the new parents. If they ruin the life
force in their children by arbitrary authority, crime and war and misery will
go on flourishing. If they carry on in the footsteps of their disciplinary
parents, they will lose the love of their children. For no one can love what he
fears.
A loving environment, without parental discipline, will take care of most of
the troubles of childhood. This is what I want parents to realize. If their
children are given an environment of love and approval in the home,
nastiness, hate and destructiveness will never arise.

respect.

TEXT:
With every decade, the length of schooling has increased, until a thoughtful person must ask whether society can
conceive of no other way for youth to come into adulthood. So writes sociologist James Coleman, chairman of the panel
on Youth of the President`s Science Advisory Commitee. In a new report,he and his team of nine social scientists and
educators recommend more work and less school for young Americans aged 14 to 24.
The trouble with school, argues Coleman,is that its focus is too narrow.Schools equip the young with basic skills, some
knowledge of their heritage, and a taste for learning. But schools are not designed to provide such adult necessities as the
ability to manage one`s own affairs or to engage in intense, concentrated involvement in an activity.Nor are they the
place for learning how to take responsibility for and work with others.Segregated by age, today`s young are saturated
with information but starved for experience.
Although changing the schools themselves could broaden their role, the best remedy is to limit schooling and provide
opportunities for the young to alternate study with work.
The panel`s most provocative proposal is to get the young out of the schools earlier and into other
organizations.Hospitals, symphony orchestras, department stores and factories are all urged to experiment with such a
plan, taking on youngsters from age 16,using them for whatever labor they can perform, while teaching them further skills
and overseeing their formal schooling. This approach would represent a fundamental shift away from the traditional
American view of education as a means of secular salvation.

TEXT:
It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the
misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch
with modern ways;that they are possessive and bossy;that they do not trust their children to deal with crises;that they
talk too much about certain problems -- and that they have no sense of humour,at least in parent-child relationships.
I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when
young.
For example, young people like doing things on the spur of the moment:it is one of their ways of showing that they
can accept a challenge.Older people worry more easily:most of them plan things ahead,at least in the back of their
minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
So my advice to you is this:when you want to borrow the family car or get your mother to mend something for
you,you will have better success if you can possibly ask in advance.
Young people also make it harder for their parents to trust them because they like to shock them. They say things like
"Everybody we know drives at 90 miles an hour" or "We`ve all decided we won`t study for our final examinations -- it`s
useless".
Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles,in entertainers and music. This is
not their main motive. They feel cut off from the adult world, into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a
culture and society of their own. Then if it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles
irritate their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior,at least in a small way,and that they
are leaders in style and taste.

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES
Dear Sir,
We are three sixth formers and we are writing to protest at the huge conspiracy against young people in Britain
today.
On the one hand society forces us to spend many years at school and expects us to work hard for exams,on the
other hand society won`t give us jobs when we finish our education.Yesterday we read the latest unemployment figures
in your newspaper. We saw that not only has the total grown startingly but youth unemployment compared with total
unemployment has gone up in proportional terms, too.
This is disgusting. We often hear older people complaining about violent football fans or young criminals. They should
remember that many of these teenagers have left school and found that society has no place for them. They are bored
and unhappy because they can`t get work.
Students who stay at school and and go on to University face the same problem when they finish their courses. They
often have to search for months, write dozens of letters and go to dozens of interviews to get a job. When they finally find
one, they discover that employers only reward age and experience. If you are young you start at the very bottom of the
ladder, and you have to spend thirty or forty years climbing slowly upwards.
We believe that a very dangerous situation is developing. Many of the young are angry and society has no use for
education and qualifications. The older generation must realise this and create more opportunities for the under twentyfives.
Yours sincerely,
Ann Collins,Stanley Finch,Suresh Patel

Thursday June 4th I went to school.I was feeling rebelious,so I wore red socks. It is strictly forbidden but I don`t care.
Friday June 5th
Miss Sproxton spotted my red socks in assembly. The old bag reported me to pop-eyed Scruton. Then he sent me
home to change into regulation black socks.
Saturday June 6th
Oh Joy!Oh Rapture!Pandora is organizing a sock protest! She came round to my house today!Yes!She actually stood
on my front porch and told me that she admired the stand I was taking! She is going round the school with a petition on
Monday morning. She said I was a freedom fighter for the rights of the individual. She wants me to go round to her house
tomorrow morning.A commitee is being set up and I am the principal speaker!
Monday June 8th
Woke up, dressed, put red socks on before underpants or vest.Father stood at the door and wished me luck.Felt like
a hero.Met Pandora and rest of commitee at corner f our road;all of us were wearing red socks.Pandora`s were
lurex. She has certainly got guts!We sang We shall not be moved all the way to school.I felt a bit scared when we went
through the gates but Pandora rallied us with shouts of encouragement.Pop-eyed Scruton had been tipped off because
he was waiting in the fourth-year cloakroom. He didn`t speak,he just nodded upstairs. All the red socks trooped
upstairs. My heart was beating dead loud.He went silently into his office and sat at his desk.We just stood there. He
smiled in a horrible way, then rang the bell on his desk. His secretary came in,he said,Sit down and take a letter,Mrs
Claricoats. The letter was to our parents,it said:
Dear Mr and Mrs ......................... ,
It is my sad duty to inform you that your son/daughter has deliberately flaunted one of the rules of this school.I take
an extremely serious view of this contravention.I am therefore suspending your son/daughter for a period of one
week.Young people today often lack sufficient moral guidance in the home, therefore I feel that it is my duty to take a firm
stand in my school. If you wish to discuss the matter further with me do not hesitate to ring my secretary for an
appointment.
Yours faithfully,
R.G.Scruton
Headmaster
Tuesday June 9th

Dear Jane,
I am a fifteen-year-old girl, and at present I am living with my parents. My problem is that I really don`t get on with
them very well.My father is always telling me to come home early and I`m not usually allowed to stay out after ten
o`clock even though all my friends stay out much later.
My mother hates all my friends. She says they`re untidy and lazy and she doesn`t like me to bring them home. Both
my parents hate the way I dress and my father says I wear too much make-up.My mother is always telling me to wear
skirts even though I think trousers are more comfortable and much more practical.
Last month I met Richard at a local pub.Since then I`ve been out with him several times and last night I didn`t get
home till 1:00 a.m..My parents were waiting for me and my father was furious. He said I must never see Richard again.
Richard is nineteen. He works as a taxi driver and he has his own small flat..I like being with him but my parents say
he`s too old for me.Next month I`ll be sixteen.Then I can leave home and get a flat.I don`t like school very much,but I
could leave and get a job.
Can you help me?I don`t know what to do..I don`t really want to upset my parents even though I don`t get on with
them. But the thought of living in a flat away from them is very attractive.

I READ IT IN THE PAPER
No other people on earth are such avid readers of newspapers as the British. They tend to take this appetite for the
daily written word, this almost universal dependence on newsprint, for granted. Yet our appetite for newspapers is not, in
fact, matched by that of the citizens of any other country. The newspapers of the United States are vast in size and
penetrating in influence. It can be argued with a good deal of supporting evidence that their place in the historical
development of their nation has been, and still is, greater than that of the newspapers of any other country in the world.
But they are not read as the British are. Neither radio nor television has so far diminished this British enthusiasm for the
daily written word although they have affected its character and may do so still more as commercial television develops.
Yet, although the British buy more newspapers than any other people on earth, there is a far smaller variety
available. The greatly increased cost of newspaper production is often offered as an explanation of rising newspaper
readership coupled with the declining number of individual newspapers. It would not seem to be a wholly adequate one.
Economic pressure is one cause. But only one. Despite our pride in British individuality, we are subject to a conformity of
taste in matters of popular journalism that is not paralleled anywhere else. Indeed, many of us seem already to have
adjusted ourselves without discomfort, with pleasure even, to be at the receiving end of an anonymous system of mass
communication. I read it in the paper, we say, as though there already were only one paper and as though that one
paper gave all that any reasonable man should wish to know about this world.

TEXT:
In most western countries children spend a great deal of time in front of the television set, be it in the general livingroom, a special recreational room, or their own bedroom. In some relatively rich areas there may be three or more
television sets in the same house, and there are reports of children spending more time watching television than they
spend in school, and certainly more than they spend talking to their parents.
Clearly, a medium which attracts so much attention and takes up so much time cannot be ignored. In fact we have to
be prepared to accept the possibility that television should be regarded as an important agent in the development or
socialisation of the child. Besides, in some countries, most schools have the necessary facilities and equipment and,
consequently, many children are also able to view in the school as well as in the home.
Although in western countries television is primarily seen as an entertainment medium, it may also be used for
educational purposes. There are still those who speak in terms of the medium's great potential for good. In fact, at times
they appear to regard it as a panacea for the social and educational ills of society.
However, when television figures prominently in the public debate, it is generally its perceived potential for harm that
receives the attention, produces the concern and leads to public outcries, the formation of pressure groups, the demands
for censorship, the setting up of special enquires and commissions, and so on. In many western countries television is
accused of a wide variety of offences, including the destruction of moral values, inhibiting creativity, forming an obstacle
to education, wiping out hard-earned social and educational gains, developing greed and increasing crime and violence.
The attack on television does not really represent a new phenomenon; throughout history, technological innovations
in communication have been received with hostility. There are some who regard television as being entirely different in
nature and influence from newspapers and radio, but what people are saying now about television has been said before
by their ancestors about films, comics, magazines and the press.

It's quite a surprise to hear the gentle sound of a flute above the roaring traffic of Fifth Avenue. You wonder where
it's coming from. Then you see a slim girl of twenty-two in blue jeans. She is playing a silver flute standing in the open
entrance of a huge office building. Fixed to the music-stand in front of her there is a placard that reads: GOOD DAY!
PLEASE ENJOY THE MUSIC. CARLA IS MY NAME. I'M A STUDENT WHO NEEDS FINANCIAL HELP. HAVE A NICE
DAY. THANKS.
Her full name is Carla Poole and you can find her on Fifth Avenue every day except Sunday. For four hours, from
midday till four, she plays there without stopping unless a policeman tells her to leave. Then she leaves; otherwise
he could charge her with being a "public nuisance". Actually she no nuisance at all. Shoppers and people who live in this
elegant part of Manhattan frequently tell her how much they enjoy her music, and they put a lot of money into a little
wooden box under her placard.
Carla is equally interested in modern jazz and in classical music, and she used to play both when she first started
her solos on Fifth Avenue four months ago. In those days, people gave her about thirty dollars a day. Now that she
knows their taste, they give her fifty or sixty a day.

For many people work is monotonous and soul destroying because they do the same thing day in day out. They do
not work because they want to, but because they have to. It's a question of keeping body and soul together and making
ends meet. For them there is no job interest and they would much prefer to spend the best hours of the day doing
something else. At work they dream of watching television when they get home or working in the garden at the weekend.
For these people work is just a "meal ticket".
But work is also other things. It gives us the opportunity to meet and get to know other people. It gives us a sense of
achievement and self-respect. It is a reflection of our social status, abilities and success. And it is satisfying when it
demands the best of us. It is for these reasons that work itself is a kind of education, because it teaches us about
ourselves and others, and how society works. It is also true that most people need some kind of activity, because if they
had absolutely nothing to do, they would probably either go mad or die of boredom.

WHERE IS THE OFFICE AUTOMATION TAKING US?
In texts 1 and 2 below you will find the comments of two American scientists on this question.
Text 1
Dr Andrew Grove is president of Intel Corporation, of Santa Clara, California. He comments:
"The offices of today are not that different than 16 years ago, and I don't think the offices of 2000 are going to be
dramatically different than they are now. The year 1968 is as far from us as the year 2000. A worker in the 1968 office
could adjust to today's office within hours, and a worker today could easily adjust to the office of the year 2000 in less
than a day. The functions that offices perform today are the same as 16 years ago, only the process will be further
aided by electronics. There won't be any science-fiction type of changes. I think the term "electronic cottage" is bunk.
Offices will still exist in the year 2000. Some futurologists don't understand why people go to work to a great many
workers, the office is as important a social institution as home and family."
Text 2
Astronomer and physicist Robert Jastrow is professor of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College, founder and former
director of NASA's Godard Institute for Spaces Studies. He predicts:
"By the year 2000 the expense of maintaining a centralised office will no longer be needed. People will work at
home. Inexpensive video links will make face-to-face contact available electronically. The global telecommunications
revolution has begun, and by 2000 it will have affected every worker. The Industrial Revolution took people off the
farms and out of the home into the cities. Now the Electronics Revolution will put father at one computer terminal,
mother at another and children doing school work on the third. The forces of technology that have driven the family
asunder will put it back together again in an "electronic cottage" by the year 2000. When the glass wires are in each
American home, the TV will become a video phone that projects 95% of the reality of face-to-face contact. We will be
able to sit across the table from our boss electronically and see every coloration of his face, and it will be just as

Margaret is married with two small children, and for the last seven years has been working as a night cleaner with
one of the big contractors who provide cleaners to both private and government office buildings all over London.
She trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her oldest child became seriously ill with asthma. "I would have liked to
go back to it, but the shifts were all wrong for me. They work from 8 or 9 at night till 8 in the morning, and thats no good
because I have to be home to get the children up and off to school. They could do it themselves, I suppose. But I dont
think its fair to expect them to."
So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week -- Friday and Saturday nights are free -- for
the princely sum of just under 20, before tax and insurance.
"Its better than it was before we had the strike last year, but I still think they should pay us more. "She agrees that
people who work "unsocial hours" should get a bit extra, though she is pretty certain that she and the other cleaners
won't.
The hours she has chosen to work mean that she sees plenty of the children but very little of her husband: "He's
going to work as I get home, and I only see him for a couple of hours in the evenings. "But she doesn't think that puts any
strain on the relationship: "Secret of a happy marriage, that," she says with a grin.
The work she does -- hoovering, dusting, emptying waste-paper baskets cleaning laboratories -- isn't physically
very hard. But it's not exactly pleasant, either: "I do get irritated with people who leave their offices like pigsties -- tables
and desk tops are the worst, covered with sticky coffee and tea stains, with crumbs of buns and biscuits all over the
place -- it can be really filthy. I sometimes think people imagine their offices get cleaned by magic! If they thought about

NO VACANCIES
The painful experience undergone by educated, trained people who find no jobs available in their chosen fields is
becoming a source of social discontent.
Nicole van den Thillart, 35, graduated as a gymnastics teacher eleven years ago. She worked part-time while
continuing her studies in psychology and motor therapy, and then decided to quit school and become a social worker
for problem youth. Today she cannot find a job. She would like to be a chief nurse in a psychiatric ward, but knows of
no vacancies. After years of further education, she fears that she may be overqualified for any other responsible job in
the medical field that would interest her. "Sometimes I have to fight my own insecurity," she says. "On two occasions I
applied for jobs which were below my standard of education. But you don't even get them. They tell you that you're too
good. Period."

The unemployment crisis is forcing Western Europe to search for new solutions
Despite hesitant signs of economic growth in Britain and West Germany, Europe's post-war unemployment
prospects have never been more bleak. The traditional smokestack industries that powered its economies into the 20th
century are falling by the wayside; yet they are not being replaced by new industries of the 21st. As a result, Europe's
jobless rolls have swelled almost without interruption. More than 18 million people are now out of work roughly 12
percent of the work force. By the end of next year, reports the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD), another 2 million people will be without jobs. Beyond any doubt, unemployment in Europe has
entered a new dimension. Realising finally that the disease is chronic, European leaders are now searching for new
cures ranging from shortened workweeks to early and sometimes forced retirement. They are implementing job-training
programs and experimenting with a slew of new "entrepreneurial" programs to help unemployed workers become selfemployed small business men.
The efforts come none too soon. By any measure the jobless figures are numbing. Unemployment has reached 15
percent in Belgium, 16 percent in Holland, 18 percent in Ireland, 22 percent in Spain. But the stakes are not just
economic; the human toll exacted by Europe's joblessness is beyond calculation. More than a third of Britain's
unemployed workers are under 25; many have never had a chance to get the first job needed to start a career. In
France, roughly half a million people, and their families, live on a bare-bones $4-a-day government hand-out. Soup
kitchens have reopened for the first time since the 150s, and an estimated 22,000 homeless people live on the streets
of Paris and in the subways. In Portugal, some shipyard workers put in regular hours even though they haven't been
paid in weeks because they are afraid of losing the jobs that might, some time in the hazy future, bring in a
paycheque again.

TEXT:
IS THERE ANY HOPE?
John is a nineteen-year old young man who lives in a small town in the north east of England. He lives surrounded by
large areas of waste and rubble, the only reminders of the once mighty steelworks that had brought relative prosperity
and high employment to the town. John has not had a "real" job since leaving school at the age of sixteen. He wanted to
be a mechanical engineer. He had two spells working on one of the Government's special employment measures,
separated by a period of unemployment. Neither occasion offered him any engineering work experience, nor did he
receive any training.
After a further period of unemployment, relations became very strained at home. Matters reached breaking point
after John had become involved in a serious fight with his younger brother. This fight led to John being thrown on to the
street by his irate father. The local social service department provided him with some "expensive but nasty" hotel
accommodation which he disliked intensely. With some struggle he managed to get the local authority flat but was
unable to get a grant to furnish it. He lived in the flat which contained a television, a bed and an old carpet. John became
very desperate and decided to take matters into his own hands. He needed money to make a home.
His solution was to steal eggs from a local chicken farm and sell them door to door. For a while his little "enterprise"
was successful. He bought some furniture and was able to go out and make friends. Then he got caught and was
sentenced to a period in the local detention centre. Having served this time, John left the detention centre to face the
world without any money, without a job, without a family, without a home, without any skills and, perhaps more seriously,
without hope. His only gain was a criminal record.
He set about the task of trying to get a job, soon to discover that his new acquired criminal record meant that his
chances of success were worse than ever. John has now been unemployed for nearly one year. Although he goes
through the motions, he has given up any hope of ever getting a job. He faces his future adulthood with resignation and
acquiescent desperation. He sees little of the world around him to suggest that things are going to change significantly
in the future.

FROM CASABLANCA TO HANOVER
Aziz is Moroccan. But he lives in Hanover in West Germany. He was born in Casablanca and lived there until he
was 18. His father died when he was very young. His mother worked as a maid in the house of a French businessman.
She had to earn the money to keep Aziz and his two sisters.
Aziz went to school. But he left when he was 14. He wasn't interested in the stuff the teachers told him about
France. Instead he enjoyed showing tourists round the town. When he had a bit of money, he went to the cinema or sat
in a cafe for hours talking to friends. But when he was 18 he had enough of this. His mother was always complaining he
didn't work; but he couldn't find a job: there was no job.
He knew a few Europeans. One of them helped to get him a job in Germany. He couldn't wait to leave; at last he
would see the big cities he had always heard about. And he'd be earning money. The European and Aziz's family found
the money for the passport. It took a long time to get it. But in the end it came.
Now he works in a hotel in Hanover. He works hard, doesn't earn much money really, and sometimes meets people
who don't like Arabs. "But it's better than Casablanca", he says. "Except that Europeans don't know how to relax, to
live".

Read the following texts carefully.
Eating out
The British have imported food from very different cultures, e.g. the Indian, the Chinese and the Italian.
One reason for the popularity of these types of restaurant is that they are often much cheaper than the more
traditional British ones which serve a mixture of British and French cooking.
In the larger cities there is a great choice of restaurants. A good example of this are the vegetarian restaurants
which offer a different type of food.
Take-away food
Restaurants often have a take-away service in which you buy the food cooked and take it to eat elsewhere. The
most common are Indian, Chinese and Italian pizza take-aways and there are also the American fast-food restaurants.
The original British take-away food is fried fish and chips (fried potatoes) and there are still hundreds of fish and chip
shops.
Self-service
Another cheap way to eat out is to go to a self-service cafe where you serve yourself from a counter and pay for
your food before eating it.
Many self-service restaurants now offer a good range of salads and hot meals.
Restaurants
Restaurants are usually more expensive than fast-food restaurants or self-service cafes.
Most restaurants show a menu outside the building so you can see the type of food served and the prices.
Drinks such as wine and beer usually cost more in a restaurant than in a shop or pub.
A. Are these statements true or false?
1. Traditional restaurants are more popular than Indian, Chinese or Italian restaurants.
2. People save money if they go often to these types of restaurant.
3. When you go to a take-away restaurant you buy the food you want to eat and then you sit at the counter and enjoy
your meal.
4. In a self-service cafe things are more expensive because there is a waiter.
5. You dont have to go inside a restaurant to see what they are serving.

London is the biggest city in Britain and one of the most important cities in the world. It is a centre for business and
tourism.
The river Thames is part of Londons history. The Romans built the town beside the river. That small town became a
large city but the river Thames is still the centre of London.
In London you are never far from the river Thames. Tourists enjoy going on boat trips on the river. A trip on the
Thames is packed with interest and gives us a fine view of London. When we pass under London Bridge, we can have a
magnificent sight: the Tower of London and, up on its hill, St. Pauls Cathedral. Ahead of us is Tower Bridge.
The Tower of London is a castle. Its oldest part was built nine hundred years ago but later kings enlarged it, making
it a fortress, a palace and a prison. You will soon see the Yeoman Warders, or Beefeaters in their picturesque uniforms
of four centuries ago.

Harold Pilling used to sell newspapers in London. He didnt use to earn much
money and he always used to eat at the cheapest cafes in town. He couldnt help
dreaming of the day when his life would change. He used to think that one day he
might be rich. One morning, about two years ago, he went to wash his hands in the
bathroom. When he touched the soap, it turned into gold. He couldnt believe it, so
he touched his shoes. They turned into gold too. It was the most amazing moment
of his life. Then he put his hand on the door, the mirror, the towel and the floor, but
nothing happened. At first Harold didnt understand, but he learned the secret when
he touched a shirt and a spider and they turned into gold. He sold his shoes, the
soap, the shirt and the spider and now he is one of the richest men in England. When
he needs some money, he just touches a stick or a sock and sells it. He always ears
at the most expensive restaurant in London. His friends cant understand why he
never uses a spoon, and why he never eats sausages, or soup, or snails, or steak.

In the Town
Your base can be one of Britains interesting towns. With a history dating from Stone Age times, the chances are that
your own town or city will have a story to tell: in its buildings, its position in the surrounding neighbourhood, and in the
very names of its streets.
If you visit a Tourist Information Centre (there are over 500 throughout Britain) you will find it chock-full of information
and suggestions about local events, ideas for short visits from the town, and places of interest near you. Very often a
Town Trail has been prepared. This teaches you about the town by directing you along a route chosen for historical and

The Best Years of Your Life
"The best years of your life", so everyone says. But are they? We asked two
British teenagers, Phil (17 years old) and Christina (16 years old), to examine
their lives, the good and bad things about being their age. Christina, who has
lived in Portugal for some years, also compares her life with that of her
Portuguese friends.
Part 1
A. Before reading:
In not more than 35 words state your opinions about the good and bad
aspects of being a teenager nowadays.
B. Read through the text and carry out the tasks indicated below.
Christina

My life hasnt been that bad, in fact its been pretty good, especially the
last ten years. When you are my age you can do lots of things, you get the chance
to try them without everyone saying you cant, as I think may happen later on
in life, say, when you are forty and have lots of responsibilities. Also have
the chance of being almost an adult but still getting away with being young. Your
parents dont treat you like a child, they trust you more than when you were
fourteen, for example. Of course you are still basically under their authority,
you are not independent yet. I know that parents are only concerned about whats
happening to you, but sometimes they really worry too much. Theyll say Oh, where
are you going? or What time will you be back? and things like that even if
you are only going round the shops. On the other hand, if you say you will be
back at about 6.30 and you are not, they dont really mind, especially when I
am in Portugal which they think is much safer than England. Its smaller, I know
everyone in town and also its cheap to get a taxi home if its late and you need
to be at home soon. In England everything is so expensive that taking a taxi is
a luxury. I get away with more when I am in Portugal than I do when I am in England.
I have many Portuguese friends and their parents are stricter than mine. They
have to be back at a certain time and theres no but... about it. Family is
very important and people dont go out on a Sunday because they have Sunday
lunches; or, if family comes to visit they have to stay at home. If their
grandmother is staying over on a Saturday night, then my Portuguese friends dont
even think of going out. It would be really rude.
Phil

I dont know whether this is the best time of my life because I still have
the rest of it to go, but so far its been good. Having said that, its also one
of the most difficult times because you already have to take important decisions
about what you are going to do later, what subjects you want to specialize in,

what degree you are going to get, what career... Thats why this is the time for
trying out the different things that you think you may like, so that you can find
out what you are best at for the future. So you should try all sorts of sports,
hobbies and activities and see what really fits in with you. This is a turning
point in our life and sometimes there is a lot of pressure on you to work out
what you want to do... I still dont know for sure; all I know is I want something
to do with Art because Im very keen on painting. My strongest subjects are
English, History of Art and Art. But all in all I cant complain about my life
though money is always a problem; I get a regular allowance that I have to level
out and know what to spend where. Everyone is always running out of money these
days, but thats about it.
I get on OK with my parents, its not like we have rows with one another or
anything like that. A lot of people think that boys have more freedom than girls,
but in fact I know some girls that have more freedom than I do. If they go out
in their area, to a cinema or a pub down the road, they can be back any time they
want, that is, if the parents know who their friends are. On their own its
different and especially if they are travelling further away. But I have no major
problems. I also get on well with both my sister and my elder brother, but I hate
being the youngest because Im always living under their shadow. People tend to
say Look at your brother, look how well hes done. That is really annoying.
Thats him, Im me.
1. The statements below are said by Christina and Phil. Read the text
carefully and identify who says what.
a. When you are a teenager you profit from the advantages of two ages,

In a way, the old school spirit symbolizes all that discipline stands for.The
principal of a large boys' school said to me not long ago when I asked him what
sort of boys he had,"The sort that goes out with neither ideas nor ideals".
At Summerhill we treat children as equals.By and large,we respect the
individuality and personality of a child just as we would respect the
individuality and personality of an adult, knowing that the child is different
from an adult. We adults do not demand that adult Uncle Bill must clear his plate
when he dislikes carrots,or that father must wash his hands before he sits down
to a meal.
Children brought up under the wrong type of discipline live one lifelong
lie. They never dare be themselves. They become slaves to established futile
customs and manners. They accept their silly Sunday clothes without question. For
the mainspring of discipline is fear of censure.Punishment from their playfellows
does not involve fear. But when an adult punishes, fear comes automatically. For
the adult is big and strong and aweinspiring. Most important of all,he is a symbol
of the feared father or feared mother.
The future of humanity rests with the new parents. If they ruin the life force
in their children by arbitrary authority, crime and war and misery will go on
flourishing. If they carry on in the footsteps of their disciplinary parents, they
will lose the love of their children. For no one can love what he fears.
A loving environment, without parental discipline, will take care of most of
the troubles of childhood. This is what I want parents to realize. If their children
are given an environment of love and approval in the home, nastiness, hate and
destructiveness will never arise.
B. Scan the text for more detailed information in order to do the following.
1. Find evidence to support the following statements.
a. When boys leave the traditional school they aren't prepared for life.
b. Adults don't do things that sometimes force children to do.

PART 1
A. With the disappearance of the old apartheid barriers, South Africa
has socially turned into what Archbishop Desmond Tutu calls "a
true rainbow nation".
In about 30-35 words, explain what you think Desmond Tutu means by
that expression.
B. Read the text through and answer the questions below.

Undeniably, great things have happened since Mandela took office in May 1994
and began easing violent racial and political tensions at home and ending the
nations isolation abroad. Socially the old apartheid barriers have disappeared
with hardly a trace in what Archbishop Desmond Tutu hails as a true rainbow
nation. Black-run restaurants are fashionably In spots for whites. Pride in South
Africas international sporting success in rugby, cricket and recently three
Olympic medals cuts across all racial lines.
Black power has a hold on at least some of the power structure. Most of the
nations local authorities from small township management committees to large
Municipal councils are racially integrated, with about 80% headed by black or
colored mayors. The civil service has been transformed: 7,000 white jobs have
been taken over by blacks without a protest. This remarkably unbloody
transformation from apartheid police state to fully democratic nation has been
justly called the South African miracle.
The big question is, What next? With a new constitution in effect since May
and the 78-year-old Mandela speaking openly of taking things easy as he prepares
for his announced 1999 retirement, South Africans recognize that a fresh chapter
and new challenges are at hand.
Uncertainty about the economy extends far beyond worries about the rand. In
the past three years South African inflation has tumbled from double digits to
about 8% annually. Unemployment, however, has quadrupled in the conventional
sectors of the economy in the past 30 years.
Mandela and Mbeki* have said the right things about improving housing and
education, but they are having difficulty delivering. Last year $645 million was
set aside to build new houses, but, incredibly, nearly 85% of the total was
returned to the treasury. This was a monument both to the bureaucracys honesty
and to its ineptitude. Of the 1 million houses projected to be built in five years,
only 100,000 have been built so far owing to production delays.
As for education, 50% of the population is under 15. Funding new schools is
imperative but difficult when more than 20% of the budget is spent servicing the
national debt.

Violent crime is savaging the country, terrifying residents of all races and
income levels, causing wealthier, educated citizens to emigrate, deterring
talented expatriates from returning and scaring off investors. Since 1990,
according to the Nedcor Project on Crime, Violence and Investment, rape is up
81%, serious assault 38%, vehicle theft 43% and murder 26%. The police force is
undermanned, underpaid and often in cahoots** with muggers and carjackers. In
Soweto residents joke that BMW means break my window.
Drug abuse has become a scourge. The new South Africa is wide open to
international air flights, and visaless tourism has all but eliminated border
controls. Most of the worlds drug markets are saturated, but we are fresh
territory and a target for everyone, says Adele Searll, a leading antidrug
activist.
The A.N.C.*** is to be commended for trying to get it right, but haste does
matter in an aggressively competitive world. Like Josiah Thugwanes victory in
the marathon at Atlanta, which provided South Africas crowning memory of the
Olympics, the ultimate success of the rainbow nation still lies at the end of
a long road of commitment and hard work. The road needs to be traveled at a swift
pace. reporting by Peter Hawthorne/Cape Town

If the celebrations in Brussels

because the final agreement depends on
