Third Grade News
February 2017
Math
This month we will continue
studying area and perimeter. Students
will solve real world and mathematical
problems involving perimeters of
polygons and relate area to the operation
of multiplication and addition. Please
work on memorizing all multiplication
facts with your child to ensure their
continued success in math. We will be
learning about fractions as parts of a
whole and understanding a fraction as a
number on the number line. Students
will learn to explain equivalence of
fractions in special cases, and compare
fractions by reasoning about their size.
English Language Arts
Third graders will be exploring
mysteries as they describe characters in a
story, their traits, motivations or feelings
and explain how their actions contribute
to the sequence of events. They will read
on level text orally with accuracy to
increase comprehension and fluency
skills. Students will create engaging
audio recording of stories or poems that
demonstrate fluid reading. They will
also ask and answer questions to show
their understanding of a text.
Our writing will be developed
around realistic fiction and biographies.
The students will improve and
strengthen writing by planning, revising
and editing with the support of teacher
and peers. They will use technology to
produce and publish various pieces of
their writing. Students will continue to
improve their grammar skills as they
demonstrate the appropriate use of
capitalization, punctuation and spelling
when completing various third grade
tasks.
Fred Olds Elementary
Science
Third graders are studying
objects in the sky. They will learn that
objects in the sky have positions and
patterns of movement that can be
observed, described, and used to make
predictions. Time will be spent moon
gazing at night to observe and learn
about the moon phases. The students
will be recording and drawing in their
moon journals throughout the month.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies unit this quarter
will be civics and government. Students
will work in small groups to complete
activities designed to enhance their
learning experience as they study the
development, structure and function of
the local government. They will learn
the importance of citizens participating
in their communities.
