Ethics of Biotechnology

Introduction:

 Biotechnology: discuss the benefits and concerns of emerging biological applications of

genetic modification with regard to crops.

 Length of lesson: 90 minutes

 VA Standards of Learning:

BIO.6 The student will plan and conduct investigations in which

h) use, limitations, and misuse of genetic information
i) exploration of the impact of DNA technologies

Learning Objectives:

 The student will be able to explain how DNA technologies allow scientists to identify,
study, and modify genes.
 The student will be able to explain how genetic engineering techniques are used in a
variety of industries, in agriculture, in basic research, and in medicine.
 The student will be able to explain how biotechnology creates a great potential for the
development of useful products through genetic engineering.
 The student will be able to understand and explain the practical and ethical questions
which are raised when altering genomes.
 The student will be able to form an educated opinion on the benefits and concerns
regarding biotechnology with respect to genetic modification of crops.
 The student will be able to either draft a letter, create audio, or create a video which will
be sent to a Virginia Senator either expressing support or concern regarding genetic
alteration of crops.

Teaching and Learning Sequence:

 Introduction/Anticipatory set:
(10 mins) Begin class with discussion of Biotechnology using prepared powerpoint.
Discussion should play both sides of the genetically modified foods argument. Explain
how scientists can manipulate the DNA of various crops in an attempt to increase crop
yields, disease resistance, and availability to populations in need. Also explain how little
research has been done on the effect of genetically modified crops on humans and
animals. Also explain how many corporations have a financial interest which may
supersede any humanitarian implications genetically modified crops may have.

 Lesson Development
(15 mins) Before showing videos to class, explain that they will individually express in
writing, audio, or video their opinions regarding genetically modified foods. Also
explain that the classes work will be sent to VA senator Jim Webb. Show both videos to
the class. The first video provides an opinion in support of GM crops. The second video
provides an opinion questioning the ethics of GM crops. (15 mins) Allow students to
brainstorm and further research the topic using their computers. Students will outline
their ideas as they work. The teacher will monitor progress during this time to insure on
task behavior, aid in research, and answer any questions. (40 mins) Allow students to
begin working on their opinion piece. Teacher will monitor progress and provide aid as
needed.
 Closure
(10 mins) End class by outlining what was presented during the lesson, making sure to
direct questions to the class in order to determine retention of the SOL. Explain to
students that they may continue work on their opinion pieces outside of class, but must
have a finished product by the next class period, at which point all documents, audio, or
videos will be sent to Senator Webb.

Assessment

 Formative: Students will outline their ideas during research time. The teacher will
monitor each student’s progress and ask and answer question to help guide students in the
appropriate direction.
 Summative: Students will create a document, audio clip, or video clip to be sent to
Senator Webb expressing support or concern regarding genetically modified crops.
