Sorting Objects

C.C. & State Standard(s): K.MD.B.3 Classify objects and count the number of objects in each

category.

Objective(s): The students will be able to sort common objects by size, color, placement in the

room.

Student Friendly Objective(s): Today we are going to practice sorting items by similarities that

they have.

Assessment: The students will sort objects in a large group by the objects similarities or by the

objects placement in the room.

Key Vocabulary: Grouping, similarities, different.

Anticipatory Set: Set common objects out in front of the class. Call each child up 3 at a time to

feel the objects. When the students have, all felt the objects, ask them what are some of the

different things about the objects.

Recall Prior Knowledge: Name the shapes that you know.

Input/Modeling: Today we are going to sort objects that are similar to each other. That means

that we put objects together that are alike. They could be the same color, the same size, soft,

round square, bumpy or smooth. I am going to group the small objects. Put the small objects

together.
Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: Put all of the items back together and ask the

students to pick another way to sort the items. Once they pick a way, call children up one by one

to sort the object. Repeat this activity with a different way to sort.

Input/Modeling: Tell the students that we can also sort items by were they are at. Tell them for

example, the floor is under. The ceiling is above. They children are beside each other.

Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: Ask the children to find things in the classroom

and identify if they are above, under or beside them. Write the items on the board.

Closure: We can sort different items in different ways.
