ENG 5312 Mechanics of Solids II Assignment 1

Note: You must also use the proper units at all times. All the details must be included through neat
sketches showing free body diagrams, details of dimensions, spacing, etc.

Q1. As a review your knowledge from Mechanics of solids I draw bending moment and shear
force diagrams for the beam. Find the maximum principal stresses in the beam. Hint: you
can look at the cross-sections that contain either maximum bending moment or maximum
shear force. Think where the worst stresses are going to be within each cross-section.

Q2. Find the stresses at points A and C (C is just inside the corner) and represent them on an
elemental volume at the respective point. At the same points, find the principal stresses,
maximum absolute shear stress and their directions using Mohrs circle.

Q3. At one of the critical points in a body, strains are measured using a strain rosette of three
strain gauges which are arranged at 120 to each other. The three gauges measured strains
to be 100, 200 and 270. Find the principal strains and maximum in-plane shear strain
at the critical point through Mohrs circle.
