Summary of Lesson
One-
What I learnt-

I learnt what real-time information is

and what category live information
comes under. I also learnt what
commerce is, which is online
buying/selling or auctions, and the
different categories it includes.
Another thing that I learnt is that there
are 9 different online services and
online services are made up or
different categories; each online
service is classed as a group within the
Online World. For example a type of
Government could be taxes, benefits,
or votes.

Lesson 2
-Online Advertising
There are 4 different types of online
advertising. The 4 different types
are search engines, email
marketing, banner and pop-up
advertising, and Pay per click
advertising.
Search engines results
page- Companies can pay
search engines, such as
Google or Bing, to
advertise their products in
a pop-up or link when something
related is searched.

Email marketing- Email marketing is

when a company you have recently
bought something from, sends you an
email about their new products. They
have your email because during the
process of payment
or making an
account, you have to
enter your email
address.

Banner and Pop-up Advertising-

This when animated advertisements
pop-up on the current web page
advertising products that you may
previously looked at or related
products. It also can be things that you
have not seen before, for example
information about the latest offers.

Pay per Click

These advertisements
are similar to other
advertisement types but instead of the
company whose advertisement it is
getting the money
and benefit, the
search engine you
payed to advertise
your product get
the money. For
example if someone
clicks on an
advertisement that is sponsored by
Google, Google will get the money and
not the advertisement owner.
-Common Features of Online
Adverts
All online advertisements contain a
hyper-link which takes you to the
original website/page the advert is
from. Another common thing is that all
adverts are bold and eye-catching
colour scheme to attract the audience
and persuade them buy their product.
Adverts normally consist of very few
words because large amounts of text
can put people off.

-What is Online Storage?

Online storage is a place online where
you can save/upload any files for other
people to access. This is a great way to
store your data without using it and
making it easier to access because you
can access it anywhere. It also makes it
easier to back-up or transfer files
because it is saved on a portable site.
Advantages and
Disadvantages
-Online Advertising

Search engines results page-

Advantages- You get immediate offers
and deals for the product you are
looking for. It also makes it easier to
access and locate the product you want
to purchase.
Disadvantages- Sometimes the offers
you get can be fake and they can lead
you to a fake website. It can also get
annoying having the same
advertisement showing up again and
again.

Email Marketing-
Advantages- It makes it easier to keep
up the new offers and deals from online
stores you have recently purchased
items from

Disadvantages- You can get a lot of

spam emails that would take up
unnecessary space in your inbox

Banner and Pop-up Advertising-

Advantages- Latest offers and great
deals pop-up on your screen without
you having to searching for anything in
particular.
Disadvantages- Animated pop-ups
can get annoying and some pop-up too
often when you dont want to see them
again.

Pay-Per-Click Advertisement-
Advantages- Helps sell products by
using big search engines to sponsor
your products (ads)
Disadvantages- For every individual
that clicks on your advertisement, you
dont get the money, the search engine
does. You will only gain money if the
customer buys your product.

Summary of Lesson Two-
What I learnt-
I learnt that there are 4 types of online
advertising, which are: Pay-per-click, search
engine results page, email marketing, banner
and pop-up advertisement. I also learnt what
online storage is, which is a place where you can
store your data online.

Lesson 3
-Online data storage and
documents

What do the following words mean?

Download- A download is when you move
uploaded files from a system to your own
Upload- An upload is when you move a file
from your own system to another, for
example uploading it on a website
Algorithm- It is a mathematical step-by-
step process which is used to programme
something to carry out instructions or work
or calculations
File Compression-
File compression is when you reduce the
size of the file(s) so it takes less space on
your computer. By compressing your files, it
allows you to compress multiple files
together to make them the size of one
original file.

Online Document Collaboration-

Online document collaboration is when you
allow multiple people to work online
together on one piece of work to achieve a
final piece.

Online Software vs Standalone-

(Google Docs vs Office)
An online software is normally any file you have
downloaded and requires a simple set-up to
install the programme. These files are often quite
small. Whereas a standalone is a large file, often
large programmes like Microsoft office. You can
download these files without the use of internet.

Access Control-
Access control is when you allow someone to
access your computer by giving them a user
name and password. This allows them to access
files on your computer from your own computer.
An example of this is TeamViewer.

Summary of Lesson Three-

What I learnt-
I learnt how to reduce the size of files
without deleting certain parts of it. I also
learnt what access control is and an
example of it, which is TeamViewer. I also
learnt what online software vs standalone
is. I also now know the accurate definitions
of the three words: download, upload, and
algorithm.

Questions-
1. What does algorithm mean?
-It is a mathematical step-by-step
process which is used to programme
something to carry out instructions or
work or calculations
2. What is file compression?
-It is when you reduce the size of a file
by zipping it up or compressing it.

Lesson 4
-Online Communication 1

Online Communities- These are online

groups made by people who have the same
kind of interest. This groups can be based
on game, television shows, etc., to discuss
to certain topic. For example
LittleBigPlanet Forum is a page by the
original makers of the game, for the
LittleBigPlanet community to get together
and share ideas they have created.
However online communities require a
certain etiquette called netiquette. This is
an online set of rules for behaviour while
using the selected online community.
Web logs (blogs) - These are like online
journals or diaries that are updated very
frequently. They often talk about activities
they have done lately or any personal
feelings or advice they want to share.
These often consist of text explaining such
things as photos or videos.

Micro-blogging sites- Micro-blogging is

very similar to blogging but it is just very
short phrases to explain a certain event.
For example if you are really excited about
going somewhere, you will add a photo and
describe it as excited. This type of
blogging is often used of social media sites
such as Twitter or Facebook to explain a
photo or video.

Wikis- Wikis are online sites that contain

information that people can use or edit.
These often contain a source that will take
you to the original place the user got the
information from, allowing you to get more
information about the topic. An example of
a Wiki is Wikipedia. This is an online
encyclopaedia that users can edit and add
information.
Chat Rooms- Chat rooms are interactive
online communities where people can talk
to each other regarding a certain subjects,
for example a game or a fan base. By
having a chat room it allows multiple
people to talk together in one place.

Podcast- A podcast is a series of videos or

audio files that can be accessed or
downloaded from the internet. These audio
files or videos can also be published as
blogs, or vlogs if they are videos. An
example of vlogs is on YouTube, where
individuals can share videos of their
everyday life.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) - A

VLE is an online educational resource for
students to access and to catch up on any
work they have missed. A VLE often
contains educational resources such as
lessons, tests, or projects for the students
to use and increase their knowledge in a
certain subject. A VLE can also be used to
give in projects or homework to your
teachers by using the internet. An example
of a VLE is Edmodo or Moodle.

Social Networking Sites- A social networking

site is an online community where people can
communicate by using a personal profile to add close
friends or families that live far away. By having a profile
it also allows you to post photos or videos to share with
your family or friends. This allows you to catch up with
family and friends and get instant replies from them by
using a social networking site. An example of a social
networking site is Facebook or Twitter.

Lesson 5
-Online Communication 2

Social Networking- Social networking is a

way of keeping touch with family or friends
by using social networking sites or apps. By
using social networking sites or apps allows
you to get talk and interact with people
anywhere in the world and get instant
replies. Social networking sites or apps are
cheaper to use because they require the
use of internet.
Instant Messaging- Instant messaging
allows you to message family or friends and
get instant replies. Instant messaging is
good in some ways because it allows you to
save money or message for free with the
use of Wi-Fi. However it also has
disadvantages because viruses can spread
easily from one device to another.

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) -

Voice over internet protocol is a way to
interact and communicate with people
across the globe by using video or audio
calls and messages. This is an easier and
cheaper way to communicate with people
far away without any extra cost and without
wasting time. An example of VOIP is Skype,
which allows you to message and call
people around the world with the use of
internet and no extra costs.
Summary of Lesson Four-
What I learnt-
I learnt what VOIP is, which is connecting with
people across the globe by using audio or video
calls, an example of this is Skype.

Lesson 6
-Cloud Computing and Ubiquitous
Computing
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------

Cloud Computing
Cloud computing allows
you to save space on your
computer by saving your files onto an online
database that you can access from any electronic
device. By having it saved onto an online
database allows you to access your files from
anywhere around the world and even allow
anyone else to access your files but with your
permission. However, although it has many
useful features, it also has some major concerns.
For example the safety of your
files, some files can be hacked and
accessed by unauthorised people
or even the host because you have
no control over your files anymore because they
have been stored online. Another disadvantage is
that you sometimes dont have access to internet
or you dont have a good connection so you cant
access your files.

Ubiquitous
Computing
Ubiquitous
computing is a type of computing that exists
everywhere. Ubiquitous computing requires
the use of a processor or radio frequency
identification (RFID) chips to put into your
device in order for it to work. These chips or
processors can be put in to things
such as, clothing, appliances,
vehicles, buildings, people, and
many more.

Radio frequency identification

(RFID)
Radio frequency identification is a chip that is
put into items that you wish to track and
monitor. The radio frequency
identification chip is very useful
for shop keepers because it
allows them to monitor items
that they are selling. It also
allows them to catch a thief in
case of a robbery because once a robber goes
past the gates that are placed in front of the
entrances and exits, the radio frequency
identification chip with automatically trigger
the alarm in the shop.

Summary of Lesson
Six
What I Learnt-
I learnt what cloud computing is which
is saving your files on an online
database to reduce the amount of
storage you take up on your computer
and to also allow you access your files
from any device. I also learnt what
ubiquitous computing is, which is a
processor or chip that allows you to
track and monitor your items.

Questions-
1. Is the following statement true
or false?
Cloud computing reduces the
amount of storage you take up on
your computer.
-True
2. What does Ubiquitous mean?
-It means existing everywhere
