DAILY LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH 9
Grade 9 Zeus

PROGRAM STANDARD: The learner demonstrates communicative competence


through his/her understanding of literature and other texts types for a deeper
appreciation of Philippine Culture and those of other countries.

CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-


American literature and other text types serve as means of preserving unchanging
values in a changing world; also how to use the features of a full-length play, tense
consistency, modals, active and passive constructions plus direct and indirect
speech to enable him/her competently perform in a full-length play.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner competently performs in a full-length


play through applying effective verbal and non-verbal strategies and ICT resources
based on the following criteria: Focus, Voice, Delivery, and Dramatic Conventions.

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Analyze literature as a means of understanding values such as respecting
people in a changing world.
2. Judge the relevance and worth of ideas in a text through differentiated
activities.
3. Determine ways on coping with failures.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
a. Topic: Death of a Salesman (Requiem) by Arthur Miller
b. Reference: A Journey through Anglo-American Literature (Learners
Material); pp. 610-613
c. Materials: Video clip, laptop, speakers, projector, visual aids, tape, manila
paper, markers
III. LEARNING PROCEDURE

B. Motivation
Tell the class that they will be watching a short video.
Task them to analyze what the video is all about as they watch it.
Play the video.
After the watching the video, ask the class the following questions:
1. What failure did Derek Redmond face?
2. How did he face his failure?
3. Have you also experienced failure in life? How prepared are you to face
such failure?
Tell the class that they will find out how Willy Loman faced his failure in life
as a salesman and as a father as they read the Requiem of Death of a
Salesman by Arthur Miller.
Discuss what a requiem is.

C. Presentation
a. Pre-Reading Activity (Unlocking of Difficulties)
Post three (3) sets of jumbled letters with their corresponding meaning
and synonyms on the board.
To make a short, low sound.
GURNNTIG
Synonyms: murmuring, muttering

A platform or entrance stairway at a house door.


TOOPS
Synonyms: porch, veranda

Furiously angry.
INFURTAIED
Synonyms: angered, apoplectic

Task the class to arrange the jumbled letters on their notebook to form
the correct word.
Give them one (1) minute to finish the activity.
After one (1) minute, ask for volunteers to arrange the jumbled letters in
each set on the board.
Task the class to read the words together with their corresponding
meaning and synonyms.
b. While-Reading Activity
Tell the class that they will be divided into four (4) groups.
Give each student a copy of the Requiem of Death of a Salesman.
Assign each group a character.
Group 1 Biff Group 3 Charley
Group 2 Happy Group 4 Linda
Task each group to read the lines of the character assigned to them with
proper feelings and emotions.
Divide the class.
Tell them to proceed to their groups silently.
Task them to read the Requiem of Death of a Salesman orally and
comprehensively.
c. Post-Reading Activity
Invite the chosen students who will act out the Requiem of Death of a
Salesman in front of the class.
Task the class to watch and listen carefully to their classmates as they
perform the requiem of the play.
After the performance, tell the class to remain with their groups.
Present the activity that each group needs to accomplish.

Gro Willy vs. Our Ideal Father
up 1 Directions: Identify the positive and negative
characteristics of Willy Loman as a father depicted in the
play. Support his characteristics by citing an event/events
where these characteristics were exhibited. Then list down
the characteristics of your groups ideal father. Compare
and contrast the traits of Willy Loman and the traits of
your groups ideal father using a T chart.


Gro Father and Son
up 2 Directions: Analyze the song Father and Son by
Cat Stevens. What kind of father is the persona in the
song? What could have happened to Biff and Happy if Willy
Loman had the same characteristics as those of the
fathers in the song? Sing a line or stanza that expresses
the best characteristics of a father that you like.
Gro Tips on How to Cope with Failures
up 3 Directions: Explain how Willy Loman failed his wife
Linda, Biff and Happy, and himself. Present a two-minute
commercial highlighting tips for Willy on coping with
failures.
Gro Our Own Ending
up 4 Directions: Make your own ending of
the play Death of a Salesman. Present
it through a short role play.
Present the rubrics for judging their output. (See attached rubrics)
Give them 10 minutes to finish their task.
After 10 minutes, let each group present their works.
Process their answers and outputs and give feedback.
D. Generalization
Ask the class about the sacrifices that Willy Loman did for his family.
Let them assume that they were Biff and Happy and let them explain to the
class how they would treat their father in times of delusions and how would
they help their father to cope with failures.
Give them time to write their answers. Then call volunteers to read their
answers.
IV. ASSIGNMENT
Directions: On a sheet of paper, answer Task 7 on page 613 of your
Learners Material about justifying ones act.
