1- CHAPTER-1, INTRODUCTION: (One month) boundary layer trips

This chapter should contain all the information about your research project subject (Axial
flow compressors), field of its applications, its importance, advantages, and disadvantages.
Moreover, the problems combined with the axial turbomachines (compressors) and their impact
on the performance of axial compressor should be discussed. After discussing all the problems
associated with the flow through the axial flow compressors, you should focus on the
phenomenon of flow leakage from the tip-clearance and investigate all the topics related to its
physics, formation, location and methods of alleviation. The objective of your present research
project should be written down. Finally, the thesis outline and the aims of each chapter in your
thesis should be included at the end of this chapter.

2- CHAPTER-2, LITERATURE REVIEW: (One month)

From the academic sites, a good search survey about the tip-clearance flow loss
phenomenon and the methods of mitigating the negative effects related to this problem should be
reviewed. The passive flow control methods and its applications in the field of turbomachines
should be discussed in details. Almost all the experimental and numerical work that have been
carried out is this research area - nearly in the past twenty years - should be collected, organized
chronically, read carefully and criticized from your point of view related to its important
contribution in the present research point. More papers from the references of each paper can be
obtained for more understanding. From these papers, more information about your research
subject can be obtained and used in the first chapter. .

The summary (essential findings) of the paper's work should be paraphrased and rewritten
by your style (do not make copy and paste, this is called a plagiarism and may put you under
legal investigation) and the conclusion of the previous work. At the end, you need to make a final
impression about your research subject and explore what are the techniques that the peoples tried

1
to use for reducing the losses resulted from the tip-clearance flow leakage in an axial-flow
compressor. Your should indicated clearly your research targets and your implemented CFD
approach. Finally, your contribution towards solving the present problem and what your
contributions in this field should be clearly declared.

3- CHAPTER-3, NUMERICAL METHODS (METHODOLOGY): (Two months)

This chapter is the real starting point towards your project, to start to decide what are the
numerical methods that will be used in your work based on what are the previous people
employed and what are the suitable numerical schemes used. This stage needs to be more familiar
with using the CFD solver (ANSYS). You need to know exactly how you deal with the code
(perform all the related tutorials), generate a good grid (via ICEM or TURBOGRID), how can
you import it into solver, run the solver, set you problem numerically, then make good post-
processing of your data in scientific forms and make comparison with other peoples work.
Furthermore, you need to be familiar with the grid generators codes, and modify the grid to
obtain high quality grid.

Starting with generating a 2-D grid for the 2-D geometry, generate a good structure grid,
run the solver with the suitable cascade in case of the baseline situation (blades with no winglet).
As soon as you get a confidant results, you have to update your grid to the 3-D shape and run the
solver for the baseline cascade. Then you should move to the second stage from your project and
use the passive control methods attached with the different winglets shapes and location at
different gap-size.

4- CHAPTER-4, VALIDATION: (Three months)

In this part, you need to validate your work with recent published experimental work
related to our research point before you go further. This means that you need to get a clear
experimental work from your review related to your research subject. You need to perform this
work exactly and compare your numerical results with the experimental data and see what is your
error percentage and if you can improve these results by using different numerical methods. Since
you validate your numerical model and get satisfactory results, then you should apply the passive
control method (winglets) at the tips of the blades and change the shapes and the location of these
winglets and compare the results with the baseline results in the form of the percentage of the
aerodynamic improvements and compressor efficiency.

5- CHAPTER-5, EFFECT OF TIP-GAP SIZE ON THE TIP-LEAKAGE FLOW: (three

months)
In this chapter, you will use the same numerical model that you have validated in the
previous chapter and use the same post-processing methods. However, this part is considered as
the most important part for your MSc project. This chapter will include the real work that you
will do, to complete the other people's work, get the results, and compare with previous work. In
this chapter, you need to change the clearance size with changing the shapes and locations of the
2
winglets. Then the results should be analyzed carefully and see what is the improvements or the
new results that you have got for your system.

6- CHAPTER-6, EFFECT OF WINGLET SHAPES ON THE TIP-LEAKAGE FLOW:

(three months)
In this chapter, you will use different winglet shapes at the suction, pressure and both
sides of the rotor blades and investigate their effect of the compressor performance. You should
use fixed gap-size of the clearance and analyze the solution based on the total pressure loss
related to each case.

7- CHAPTER-7, CONCLUSION AND FUTURE WORK: (1 month)

This chapter will include the important concluding points that we have got from the
previous two chapters and your remarkable recommendations to the people that they want to
work in the same field and your advices to them if they wants to follow the same methodology.

REFERENCES:
At the end of your thesis, you have to include all the references (journal papers and
books) that you have got any information from it. You need to use any software for referencing
such as EndNote or the Reference Function in Microsoft Word 2010.

This is exactly the nominal scheduled time of your MSc. Project. I hope that the situation
now is clear, just you need to concentrate and work. From what I have written, you need to
follow that time table and achieve your targets carefully.

WRITING UP AND SUBMISSION YOUR THESIS: (4 months)

Soon you reach stage-6 and you get good results from the model, the work should be organized
and published. Soon the work is published in a suitable journal, you will start the writing up stage
(managing and organizing the thesis) and finally the defense stage.

With my best wishes
