Episode 1 Lesson Plan

Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.2
Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular
details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or
judgments.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.1

as inferences drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.WHST.6-8.2.D
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain
the topic.

I can identify the main idea and key details of a non-fiction

article using a graphic organizer.
I can make an inference by combining what I know with what I
learned on a graphic organizer.
I can use a sentence starter with academic language to write
my inference.

Hook: READ 180 video clips about the Harlem Renaissance (HR):
introduces famous artists, musicians, and social issues of 1920s and
30s Harlem, NY.

Key Vocabulary: agony, universal, incident, minor, inquiry

Using a graphic organizer, students rate the words to show how well
they already know them, repeat correct pronunciation after me, write
or add to the meaning, and generate their own sentence examples
and some using sentence frames.

Accessing/Building Background Knowledge:

To build background knowledge, students will view a brainpop
video on the Harlem Renaissance and take notes on key people,
places/events, and issues.
To access prior knowledge, I show photos of HR art, and played
music of HR musicians and hold a class discussion.
Keep in Mind:
The 8 Cs targeted by this lesson include curiosity, controversy,
cooperation, and connections. Curiosity is peaked by the HR art,
music, and poetry that helps me access prior knowledge. Curiosity
and Controversy are weaved into the READ 180 video clips.
Connections for the students can be made to prior knowledge from
elementary school and beyond.
The learning styles hit by this lesson include mastery,
understanding, and interpersonal. The Mastery students will
appreciate the vocabulary learning and graphic organizer while the
Understanding students will appreciate the knowledge provided by
the Brainpop video, and the Interpersonal students will enjoy working
together in partners to complete and compare their work and notes.
