FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dec. 18, 2009 – Several students from Red Smith School will brave the cold
tomorrow morning for its third annual December Dash. The 2-mile fun run/walk and 5K
run will start at 9 a.m., run through the neighborhood on Green Bay’s far East Side and
end up back at the school for food, entertainment, door prizes and awards for 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place in different age groups and gender in each event. All proceeds from the
event will go to support Freedom House, Green Bay’s shelter for all types of families
with children located just a few miles from the school. Kids from Kindergarten through
high school are expected to join in the fun.
“It’s a great motivator for the kids,” said Jeff Jennings, event coordinator for Red
Smith. “It teaches them how they can proactively help other people in need, how they
can make Christmas special for other people who don’t have it so easy,” he explained.
“We like to think of our school as its own little community, but the fact of the matter is
we’re part of a broader community and there are some real needs out there. We do
things like this to help sensitize our kids who may not be aware of it because they didn’t
grow up with it. What better message can we teach than that?” he asked.
Robyn Davis, president of Freedom House, echoes those sentiments. “We’re only
here able to help over 100 families each year because of community, so events like this
that draw us in are especially meaningful. I can’t begin to describe what it means to our
residents to know people in the neighborhood care,” she said.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Red Smith School, located on Sussex Street. Entry
fee is $5 with all proceeds going to Freedom House. Last Year Red Smith raised $421
and with the event growing every year, they’re hoping to best that tomorrow.
Freedom House was started in 1992 by a handful of Green Bay churches to address
the growing issue of homelessness. Its vision is to provide programs that cause families
to be successful in all areas of their lives – spiritually, emotionally, socially, physically,
financially and intellectually. Since its inception, Freedom House has served 897
families and 1,807 children in the Northeastern Wisconsin area. Currently 9 families are
in house with 10 adults and 18 children; one family is in transitional housing on site.
Another 25 families are on a waiting list.
