Complex Care is a

course that is a
culmination of almost
all knowledge obtained
at this point in our
education while taking
things a step farther in
our critical thinking
skills. This courses
focus was primarily on
high acuity, restorative,
and health promoting
care of clients with
complex health problems. This course requires critical thinking, ethical
decision-making, and therapeutic interpersonal skills to create a
comprehensive care plan to return the patient to a stabilized state. This
course emphasized the necessity for autonomy and initiation of care by the
nurse, sometimes in cases where consultation is unavailable due to acuity of
the situation, requiring both sound clinical and theoretical knowledge of
physiology and pharmacology to adapt quickly to changing situations. This
further enhanced my skills in communication and collaboration, often
requiring the nurse to work diligently and soundly and know many facets
about the patients acute and chronic illnesses which have lead them to this
point in time. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the critical care unit at
Trumbull Memorial Hospital and felt that it allowed me to take my nursing
experience to the next level. The day I spent in the emergency department
was exhilarating, where I aided in the care of an unconscious overdose
patient arriving on the scene via ambulance less than fifteen minutes after
my shift began. The pace of the emergency department and critical care unit
definitely suited me and I loved the daily challenge the extremely critical
patients provided. My love for high acuity nursing began in this clinical and
only developed further as I continued my critical care experience through my
preceptorship.
