ThebuildingconstructionindustryinIndiaatpresentcontributesabout10%oftheGrossDomesticProduct(GDP).Theindustryisexpandingrapidlyatover9%ayear,
largelybythestronggrowthintheservicessector.ElectricityconsumptioninthecommercialsectorinIndiaaccountsforabout8%ofthetotalelectricitysuppliedbythe
utilitiesandhasbeengrowingannuallyatabout11%12%.

MinistryofPower(Govt.ofIndia)LaunchedEnergyConservationActin2001tospreadawarenessaboutEnergyConservationMeasuresandtoimplementEnergy
EfficientTechnologies.

EnergyConservationBuildingCode(ECBC)wasinitiatedbyBureauofEnergyEfficiency,MinistryofPowerintheyear2007toPromoteEnergyEfficientBuildingsinIndia.
Initially,theBuildingswhichneededtobemadeaccordingtoECBCwereBuildingshavingaconnectedloadof500KWormorebutnowtheCodeisapplicabletobuildings
orbuildingcomplexesthathave:

1.ConnectedLoadinexcessof100kW
2.ContractDemandinexcessof120kVA
3.Recommendedforallbuildingswithconditionedarea>500m2.
TheobjectiveofECBCistoprovideminimumrequirementsforenergyefficientdesignanddesignofbuildingsandtheirsystems.ECBCencouragesenergyefficient
designorretrofitofbuildingssothatitdoesnotconstrainthebuildingfunction,comfort,health,ortheproductivityoftheoccupants.ECBCalsomandatesthatthebuilding
hasappropriateregardforeconomicconsiderations.
