Abstract
The existing pump designs are basically the same in the mode of
operation with slight variations in the materials of construction. The
pumps are operated by the up and down movement of the handle.
The major problems associated with these pumps are the high level
of fatigue and low pump efficiency. These problems have motivated
the design and fabrication of a manually operated hand pump that
employs a gear drive in the power train to ease the operation and at
the same time increase the pump efficiency. From the test results, it
follows that for the same input, speed and the static water level
same interval of time the pump with gear drive discharges more
water than that without gear drive. This shows more ease of
operation of the pump and pump efficiency.
Introduction
Objectives
List of Apparatus:
1. Boyle's Law apparatus.
2. Hand pump.
Equipment
Procedure
1. Make sure the equipment is level, open the air vents at the top of
each reservoir and check which the oil reaches the fill level mark
on both vessel.
2. Connect the bicycle-style pump to one-way valve marked
pressure.
3. Turn the two-way valve towards the pressure connection.
4. Connect the digital temperature display.
5. Shut both air vents.
6. Note the normal air temperature in the test cylinder.
7. Use the bicycle style pump to slowly increase the pressure in the
test cylinder to 0.4 bar (gauge). Keeping the air temperature
around the ambient.
8. Quickly open the vents in the test cylinder and note how the oil
rushes in to fill the volume previously filled by the trapped air.
Note the sudden and large drop in the temperature.
