CALCULUS

(SMT 1123)

SEMESTER 1, 2015/2016
LECTURERS NAME:

Dr. AZRUL FAZWAN KHAIRUDDIN

STUDENTS NAME:

INTAN NOOR MUNIRA BINTI GHAZALI (1511688)

Objective:

The assignment that were given is to do a research about the piecewise function.
There were three choices of real life situation to complete this assignment thus, I choose
walking steps millage and relate it with piecewise function in order to apply the teaching of
calculus in real life applications.

The walking steps have been calculated using the pedometer, the range time is within
24 hours.

Data collection and analysis:

Following is the information table based on the data collected:

Figure 1: table of walking steps, distances and the calorie burnt during 24 hours range time.

Discussion.

As the student that take Calculus subject, we must apply the mathematical function in
daily life, so the assignment is all about to educate us on how to apply the mathematical
function in daily life. I choose the walking steps millage as the model. This model is the
source of data for this assignment, as I need to collect the steps those that I have walk in 24
hours using a pedometer. Pedometer is a tool which specialized to detect how many steps that
we have walked a day and it also calculate the walking distance and the calorie burnt in our
body as we need also to set the height and also the weight.

Starting at 9am till 3pm, I have recorded 6050 steps as the first data. It is the same as I
have walked for about 9.07km and have loosen for about 463.3kcal. And for the second data
that I have collected from 3pm until 9pm is 8297 steps millage, and it is about 12.44km that I
have walked also the calories burnt have reached 635.39kcal.this shows that the steps have
increased drastically as during the day as a student I walked a lot, as it was my busiest time to
walked to class and having sports as my hobby.

Third data 9pm until 3pm, the steps increased to 8557 with 12.83km and the calorie
burnt was too small for the difference of 19.91kcal between the second data. As for this data,
the time is actually for me to take rest and sleep thus there are small number of calories that
have been burnt. For the forth data, from 3am until 9am, is when I wake up to study and also
to prepare for the next class for the next day. Thus the steps millage increased to 12386 steps
and the walking distance have reached 18.57km and the calorie burnt have reached
948.53kcal. For the average in one day, I have walked for about 12000km and the calorie
burnt almost reached 1000kcal.

Conclusion:

As the conclusion, for the average healthy person they must walked for about
10000km a day for healthy body. And also, mathematical function can be used in our daily
life as it gives us benefit for instance, we can measure the calorie that we burnt as we walked
everyday. And for a healthy body, I have to calculate the consumption of calorie that I take
daily and the calorie that I burnt as I walked.
