School of Engineering

The School of Engineering came into existence on January 1, 2016 and comprises the previous schools of
Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; Civil, Environmental and Chemical Engineering; and
Electrical and Computer Engineering. Bringing the engineering disciplines together within the one school provides
tremendous opportunities for interaction and collaborative interdisciplinary research work, the sharing of resources,
strategic recruitment and infrastructure investment.

The School conducts teaching and research at both the City and Bundoora campuses, has 311 staff, 365 higher
degree research students, 5121 coursework students and an annual budget of $130 million.

Position Summary

The primary objective of the position is to support the delivery of research within the additive biomanufacturing of
clinical tools program of the recently established ARC Training Centre on Additive Biomanufacturing working in
close collaboration with industrial and academic partners. The position is based within the RMIT Centre for
Additive Manufacturing. The successful candidate will conduct applied research in the field of additive
manufacturing of metallic alloys for biomedical implants. The candidate will focus on life assessment of
medical implants through design and manufacturing process optimisation and bone tissue interface
characterisation and modelling in order to produce high performance and functional components. The
candidate will be provided with the opportunity to maintain and advance their research and/or professional
capabilities in the area of expertise. They will contribute to the academic output of the School, assist with
postgraduate and undergraduate student mentoring and work collaboratively and collegially with fellow
researchers in the Centre for Additive Manufacturing.

Key Accountabilities
1. Conduct research in the area of additive manufacturing of titanium medical implants, with particular focus
on their life assessment through the design, manufacture and bone-implant interface.
2. Establish process property performance relationships by undertaking detailed fatigue and fracture
analysis and develop numerical model to predict life of implant taking into account bone-implant interface.
3. Make a contribution to the delivery of other research projects within the program in accordance to project
plans and time frames
4. Produce research results which yield measurable outcomes and contribute to journal and conference
publications.
5. Provide research guidance and technical support to both undergraduate and postgraduate students and
other researchers associated with this area.
6. Work effectively and collegiately within a team environment
7. Undertake a range of administrative functions associated with the research project
8. Undertake teaching duties up to 10% of fulltime load.
9. Other duties as directed.

Key Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated track record and experience in the design, manufacture and analysis of components using
metal based additive manufacturing techniques
2. Demonstrated track record and experience in fracture mechanics of metallic and composite structures

3. Demonstrated track record in the modelling of failure modes of metallic composite joints

4. Demonstrated ability to carry out high quality basic and applied research.

5. Well established laboratory skills including characterization of materials/components

6. A demonstrated capacity to think laterally and use innovative approaches to establish research directions

7. Ability to clearly communicate research approaches, concepts and outcomes.

8. Ability to work effectively as a team member as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.

9. Effective time management.

10. Proven record of journal publications in a research field relevant to the position.

Qualifications

Mandatory: PhD in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, or similar Engineering disciplines.
