April 5, 2017 Grade Level Tasks

Due Friday, April 28

Share the following three items with the Leadership Team via Google Doc/Sheet with
Julie or Sue.

a. Review second trimester assessments and prioritize

importance - look for ways to streamline. Share your streamlining ideas and ideas for
supplemental assessments with the Leadership Team. Supplemental = something all
students within the grade level complete in the same manner -- examples: Nat Geo / My
Math / social studies / science assignments; chapter tests; projects; grade 3 - 6 IABs.
Consider using social studies and/or science tasks for informational text reading and writing
skills . . .

From the 2nd trimester assessments were going to take out the Aztec School Days supplemental
assessment front page, they only needed to read the article and answer D, E, F, and G. We
liked the Compare and Contrast Cards and we will choose two new ones for the 3rd trimester.
From the Volcano supplemental assessment we liked all of it for the report card assessment. The
Sea Monster article from National Geographic was great! We will find a new one from Unit 6-8 for
the 3rd trimester.

We were not a fan of the Writing Sample for Narrative in the 2nd trimester. It was more of an
inference report, than a narrative. We will be looking for an appropriate replacement with the
same rigor.

We are encouraging our students, on the opinion piece, to be honest and state their true opinion.

b. Map your third trimester assessment plan, including items and

dates.

(This might change*)

c. Consider this idea: Assess one writing genre the first trimester
(perhaps the genre that requires the most practice), two genres the second trimester, and all
three genres the third trimester. Comments? Suggestions?
5th grade likes this idea! They can build on what they know, the end will still be tough with
CAASPP, but doable.
