    andwehavetopickacollegecourserelatedtowhatwewanttodo,almosteveryonefreaksor
    changestheirmindsbecausetheyareuncertainifthat'swhattheywanttodo.Forme,sinceIwas
    15,andfirstjoinedmyfirstVol.FireDept.Ihavealwayswantedtobeafulltimefirefighter.
    Nowattheageof18inmysenioryear,IhavechosenSouthernMaineCommunityCollegein
    SouthPortland,Maine,andwillbeattendinginthefallof2017toobtainmyassociatesdegreein
    FireScience.
    Throughhighschool,Iveattendedmultiplefiretrainingschools,lessons,speeches,and
    trytoattendeverytrainingandmeetingatmyownfiredepartment.ItookaEMTcourseinmy
    junioryear,andhavepassedthephysicalpsychomotortest,butstillneedtopassthewritten.Now
    inmysenioryear,IaminaFirefighterLevel1course,whichisthecertificationlevelata
    minimum,toworkforapart/fulltimefiredepartment.
    WhileIattendSouthernMaineCommunityCollege(SMCC),IplantotakeaDispatching
    courseandawildlandfirefightercourseasmyminor.WhileattendingSMCC,IfIamaccepted
    intoalive-inprogram,Iwillbelivinginafulltimefirehousewithoneormorestudents.The
    agreementis,Icanlivethereforfreeandnothavetopayaroomandboardchargeof$8,000,but
    inreturn,Imustdothedailychoresaroundthefirehouse,attendallmeetingsandtrainingsunless
    Ihaveclass,respondtocallsunlessI'minclassor,onmyownchoosing,ifI'matthestationdoing
    homework.Thefiredepartmentsthatco-opwithSMCC,wantusstudentstosucceedandwould
    ratheruspassourclasses,thenrespondtocall.
    AftermytwoyearsatSMCC,andhopefullyobtainingmyFiresciencedegree,Iwantto
    workforafulltimefiredepartmenteitherparttimeorfulltime.Aftermyfiresciencedegree,I
    plantoattendSMCCagainforParamedicine,anddothelive-inprogramagain,andobtainmy
    Paramediclicensure.NooneelseinmyfamilywasafirefighterorEMS,andanyinterestIhadin
    thisprofession,wasnotpushedonme,butwasofmyownchoosing.ThislineofworkiswhatI
    lovedoingandIwanttogoasfarwithitasIcan,untilthedayIhavetoretire.
