Gender Equality:

Weve begun to raise daughters more like sons but few have the courage to raise our

sons like our daughters.- Gloria Steinem. Gender Equality has been a constant battle in our

society here in the USA and in countries all across the world. Gender equality is most talked

about in women, because women are discriminated everywhere and with everything. Older

generations kept the issues, its everyones job to fix and eliminate them entirely.

In 2006 the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) posted an article

on their website that stated, At least one out of every three women around the world has been

beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime with the abuser usually someone

known to her. (1) Thats 1 in 3 women, look around you and the odds that at least one of your

friends will experience something as horrifying as the reality feels surreal. Many times women

are made out to be housewives, baby sitters, and they must all know how to cook and clean to

keep their husbands and families happy. Women are often expected to work softer and cleaner

jobs as well if needed such as nurses, or child care. All though many women work longer hours

and tougher jobs, many professions only pay women $.79 on the dollar compared to a man who

makes the full $1.

Women in the Middle East and Africa are genitally mutilated daily; typically as children

without the chance to refute or fight. Genital mutilation in women, in places like Africa, is where

someone removes or causes injury to the external part of a woman's genitalia for nonmedical

reasons. According to the World Health Organization (a.k.a WHO), there are four types of

mutilation that include but are not limited to; clitoridectomies, excision, infibulation, and then

the fourth type includes all procedures. (3) Small children and women are at risk of contracting

HIV or other deadly diseases because most of the time the people performing the procedure do

not use clean or sterile equipment and are not medically trained how to do. This is just one of the

many examples caused onto someone because of their gender and the fact that many people

living in these types of traditionalist cultures dont see the harm in it makes it foreboding. This

example although harsh and cruel, is the sad reality that people in third world countries are

exposed to this daily.

This is the time for change and a time where we shouldnt put others down for our own

sympathy. Women need to empower women and together we can work towards equality. Men

need to work with women because without women and their fertile wombs we dont have people.

Its going to take a while to get their but I know that we have what it takes and we know what we

want to have so there's no doubt in my mind that we wont accomplish our dreams and create our

own standards in time. Michelle Obama once said, "There is no limit to what we, as women, can

accomplish."
