Unit Paper 4

Play is an important part of art. Szekely (2011) discusses how play develops future

notions of art, and how it is the root of sense of design, taste, and art interests. Freyermuth (2010)

discusses how she started off teaching original design concepts, but quickly grew bored with her

own teaching and predictable results. She implemented a curriculum where, in a sense, students

became the teachers, and she became the student.

I agree that play is essential to a students art- especially in elementary school. If students

can have fun with their art and like what they are doing, it will be much easier for them to let

their creativity flow and create art in the classroom. I believe that if I would have had more art

classes as a child, and if I would have been told that I could draw or create anything I wanted, I

would have enjoyed art more growing up, rather than always being told we had to color inside

the lines and that there is proper ways to create art. When I become a teacher, I will implement

this style of teaching art from a young age so that maybe my students will learn to love art at a

much earlier age than I did.
