throughtheirowncharacter.Ithasbeenproventhatamongmanythings,ittakesalargeamount

oftenacity,perseverance,andwellroundednesstoachievetheimpossible.

WaltDisney,afamousAmericanentrepreneur,animator,voiceactor,andfilm

producer,isagreatexampleofthis.HisoriginsarefromaMidwesternfarminMarceline,

Missouri,hewasthefourthchildoffiveborntoaCanadianfarmerfatherandamotherfrom

Ohioin1901.Heacquiredrudimentaryartinstructionfromcorrespondencecoursesand

Saturdaymuseumclasseshowever,Disneydroppedoutofhighschoolatseventeentoservein

WW1.Afterservingforashortamountoftimeasanambulancedriveroverseas,Disney

returnedin1919toKansasCityforanapprenticeshipasacommercialillustratorandlatermade

primitiveanimatedadvertisingcartoons.By1922hehadsetuphisownshopinassociationwith

UbIwerks,whosedrawingabilityandtechnicalinventivenesswereprimefactorsinDisneys
eventualsuccess.InitialfailuresentDisneytoHollywoodin1923.Partneredwithhiselder

brotherRoy,hemanagedtoresumecartoonproduction.

Helivedfrugallytoinvesthisfundsintomakinghiscartoonshigherquality.Hisinsistenceon

technicalperfectionandhisunsurpassedgiftsasstoryeditorquicklypushedhisfirmahead.

AlthoughhedidnthavetopofthelineinstructionWaltDisneyisreveredforhis

revolutionarystorytellingbywayofanimationsandcartoons.Evenfrombeginningsashumble

asfarmlife,hewasabletotakewhatlittlehehadbeengivenandturnitintoanempirethatis

stillverymuchalivetothisday.

Othershavemadegreatstridesthroughafullviewoflifeandhowdifferentpeople

experienceit.SomeonewhodemonstratesthisexcellentlyisnoneotherthanWaltWhitman.

Whitmanisoneofthebestknownpoetsforhisworksonthethingsheobserved.Hewasborn

intoalargeandpoorfamilyin1819.Hewasthesecondchildwithnineintotal.Hisfather,who

wasalaborer,triedmanyoccupationstokeepthefamilyfed.Theyeventuallymovedto

Brooklynsohisfathercouldtryhousebuilding.WaltattendedBrooklynschoolsuntilageeleven

whenhedroppedouttoworkasanofficeboyandeducatedhimselfbyreadingtheclassicsand

booksonhistoryandEasternandWesternphilosophy.Sincehisfatherwasalaborer,Walthad

spenthischildhoodwithworkingclasspeoplein1830hehadbecomepartofthislaborforce.

Hisjobasanofficeboyledtoanotherasaprintersdevilandfinallytoajobasaprinter.In

1836atageseventeenhetookajobinruralLongIslandasaschoolteacherwhichlastedforthree

years.Backthenteacherswerepartlypaidbyboardingaround,stayingforadayoraweekat

thehomesofpeopleinthecommunitywhocouldaffordtofeedandhousetheteacher.Boarding

aroundgaveWalttheopportunitytomeetsomeofthemoreprosperousandbettereducated

citizensofLongIsland.Atthistime,hebegantowrite.Hisfirstpoemsdealtwithhimselfhe

wouldcontinuetowriteabouthisownexperiencesallhislife,intheprocessdevelopingadeep

appreciationfortheAmericanpeopleandcelebratingtheirexperiencesandcharacter.

Throughouthislifehewaspresentedthechancetoexperiencebothsidesofthespectrum

fromthepoorlesseducatedtothewealthierandmoreeducated.Seeingalotofdifferent

lifestylesofthecommunityhelpedshapehiswritingandmakehismarkasapoet.

Therearethosewhomostwouldsayendedupinunfortunatecircumstances.Inspiteof

thistheywereabletooutshinecountlessothersinsomeinstances,theirseeminglysubpar

surroundingsaidedintheirsuccess.
