1.0 SCOPE OF WORK
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This tender set has been prepared to set out the
designers expectations for the facade treatment.

The proposed development is the Soho Skill

Exchange, a facility focussed on reskilling,
innovating and human resilience in a time where
Artificial Intelligence is exponentially making
humans redundant. Experts in technology and its
societal impacts say this will be the global crisis of
our time, over climate change and globalisation.

The Soho Skill Exchange recognises the

huge societal impact automation will have on
employment and thus human purpose. The Skill
Exchange reimagines the job centre and places
equal importance on the digital and the human
skills.

It facilitates intergenerational skill exchange

between digitally fluent, but inexperienced young
people and the digitally illiterate, but socially
experienced older generations.

The building is an extension of Soho Square and

invites the public in to create an inclusive, engaging
environment which maximises social encounter.

The programme includes the Skill Exchange

facilities, a Department of Innovation and Skills,
and an Institute of Ethics in Emerging Technologies
which together form a multi-disciplinary body to
navigate the ever-changing nature of work and the
repercussions on society, politics and ethics.

The proposed building comprises four to six storey

spaces, comprising educational, community and
retail facilities on the basement and ground floors,
SKILL and educational and office facilities on the upper
EXCHANGE floors.

The Soho Skill Exchange facilitates and depends

upon the reciprocal relationship between its
institutions of education, ethical debate and
policy making to create a hub to enact change.

1.2 DESIGN ASPIRATION FOR FACADE

Proud Proclamation to Public

The Soho Skill Exchange is the flagship of
a pioneering approach to lifelong learning.
The Soho Skill Exchange addresses Soho
Square as a monument to promote skill
exchange and to proudly proclaim its
position as a typology which has been
largely stigmatised. The facade will be the
element of the building which addresses
the public and should communicate with
the Square.

Adaptability
The structure acknowledges the
changeable nature of work and facilitates
adaptability by ensuring no internal
walls are load-bearing or fire-rated. The
facade acknowledges this change by
incorporating a non-structural system
which allows the panels to be changed as
desired.

Communicating Programme to Soho

Square
The unitised facade system offers
specificity in the variety of panels which
can be selected per 1.5 linear meters.
These panels will convey externally the
variety of exchange and space use within.

Invitation to Public
The range of facade treatments will
create a quiltwork mishmash of textures
and systems, which will create an air
of excitement in a city that is so full
of monotonous grey and glazing. This
heterogeneous facade will intrigue and
invite people into a building which is for
their use and enjoyment.

The proposal has a GIA of 8575m2.

The facade package requires 3800m2 of

unitised facade.

Location
The unitised facade system will be on each
of the external facades.
On the East and West facades it
begins from the first floor to the
uppermost floors. On the South facade
it is incorporated from the ground to
uppermost floor.
On the North facade it is incorporated from
the basement which is accessed directly
from Soho Square via the landscaped
amphittheatre
The system will be outside of the concrete
column structure and will be supported
horizontally from the concrete floor slabs
and roofs.

Panel Options
The designer will specify a range of panel
systems to be integrated into the systems.

Ease of Replacement
These panels must be easily changed
should unique occupants want to do so.
A detailed strategy for their removal and
replacement must be specified.
