20584979: What, if anything, does the
instructor do well that helps students
learn the material or makes the course
interesting? 0

Office hours are open and helpful, questions

are encouraged and debates about
interpretations of the law are also encouraged.
Instructor does an excellent job of ensuring
class understanding and keeping the class
interesting. 0

It is very clear outlined in the powerpoint

sheets. 0

In class material is covered very thouroughly. 0

Professor Chen does a great job with outlining
what we really need to know. He makes the
course enjoyable as i can tell he truly has a
passion for the subject. 0
I think the instructor already does a good job of
this, using Socratic PowerPoints and
discussion to keep students engaged. 0

0
0

The combination of case study, lecture, and

discussion helps embed the material for me.
The case studies and examples (in addition
to Professor Chen's enthusiasm for the subject
matter) also really help bring the course to life. 0

The instructor is passionate about his

teaching and projects that passion onto his
students. I very much enjoy taking this course
and am always excited to review cases and to
dissect the rationale of judges when
determining a case. 0
I really like the fact that, even in a larger class,
students are encouraged/expected to
participate, rather than just listening to a
lecture. 0

I enjoy reading and discussing the actual cases

and how the law was applied. I find debating
and interpreting the situations presented to be
very interesting and engaging. The more
controversial the case, the better! 0

Enthusiasm for the subject, a Socratic style

of teaching, and relating the coursework to
real-World situations and cases (as well as
interesting hypothetical situations) keeps the
course relevant and engaging to students. 0

Instructor tells exactly what will be on exam 0

Professor Chen's powerpoint slides are very

detailed, andhe enables us to get information
from multiple sources (slides, Schubert, and
cases). 0
Encourages open dialogue in class in a
Socratic manner 0

He has slide power points with the main

concepts, but then is able to tell stories and
examples to further illustrate the concept/law
that P. Chen is talking about 0
The enthusiasm shown for the subject
material helps a lot 0

Dr. Chen is a one of a kind professor. Not only

does he have mastery over political science,
but he also went to and graduated law school.
He puts course material in good perspective
and grades anonymously. I enjoy the Socratic
style teaching. 0

Professor Chen brings an energy to the topic

as well as a depth of knowledge on the subject. 0

Outlining both course material and

expectations for students very clearly is very
helpful for learning the material. Showing
enthusiasm for the subject and explaining the
broader applications of laws discussed makes
the course more interesting 0

I personally like the socratic dialogue

method of teaching. I think it's a good way to
keep students engaged. 0

Reading cases is nice because it is a real-world

application. Also, shows enthusiasm for the
subject makes it more interesting. 0
Engaging discussion of laws and cases 0

The Socratic method makes sure that

students keep up with readings, as well as
many of the in-class discussions. This keeps the
classroom interesting and more alive. I also
appreciate that you post your slides before
each lecture, so we can come to class and
focus on talking about the subject matter
instead of focusing on writing it down. 0
0

The in class arguments/tangents are becoming

a little annoying. The students in class seem
more interested in debating concepts than
discussing cases. I understand law, and the
class, is about thinkingcritically and
analytically, and one of the ways to do that is
by creating counter arguments. Butwhen
person A says something that person B
disagrees with, causing person B to rebuttal,
but person C is morally offended by person B's
comment- we just loose track of the subject
completely. I know for me, it's easy to loose
focus when people are arguing about topics
that are irrelevant to what the class is studying.
They aren't benefiting the class as a whole - it's
just the individual students who are looking to
argue. 0
Using examples to further explain concepts
really helps me understand the material and
makes class time more enjoyable. 0

Prof. Chen allows for a lot of dialogue to occur

between the students, himself, and the
material during lecture allowing us to dissect
the lecture a bit more as we continue to learn
about new topics. 0
He makes sure that we all understand the
slides before moving on. He also goes into
great depth when going over his power point
slides, as well as providing thorough answers to
questions that students ask. 0

The class discussion format is amazing for

getting at the nitty-gritty details of the cases
and readings. You do a very good job of
directing the discussions, as well. 0

The Socraticdialog in class is helpful, but I

feel like we get off track really easily 0

Socratic method is rad. 0

He's funny at times, which helps keep me
awake. 0

The Socratic method really forces me to do

the readings and learn the material and I enjoy
the discussion that it fosters in class. 0

He picks very relevant cases to the subjects of

law that we learn about and he keeps us
engaged when he asks random people in the
class what they think about it. I like that he
puts people on the spot with the Socratic
method because it requires you to fully
understand the readings, which aren't many
pages. 0
I find it very helpful when you come up with
examples or analogies to emphasize a certain
point of law that is hard to conceptualize in
practice in the 'real world.' 0

Engaging with the students helps me listen

and think about the proposed question from
different points of views. Not only is this
engaging but it also helps me grasp and
understand some of the more complicated
topics 0

20584980: In what areas does the
instructor need improvement? Be as
specific as possible. You may mention
teaching methods or techniques that you
have found effective in other courses. 0 20584981: In

No areas need improvement. 0 Strongly agre

I really can not think of anything! 0 Strongly agre

Uses too too many scare tactics, which

distracts from what your actually looking for in
assesments.

Often times distracte by your tangents.

You could be more specific as to what you are

covering on each day of class, even if it is just
telling us at the end of lecture. 0 Agree
Its not something that the professor does per
say but i feel like he allows for a lot of the
questions to stray to for away from the the
material and it leads to long tangents by other
students. 0 Agree

The instructor doesn't need improvement. 0 Strongly agre

0 Agree
0 Strongly agre

Professor Chen certainly knows what he's doing

but perhaps a little more forewarning as to how
the essay exams are graded would be nice.
When I was writing, I wrote trying to expound
on what I felt to be the most relevant
information and just assumed that it would be
slightly more quality and less quantity based,
but the grading showed that it was more about
how much information we could tie to the case,
judging based on what buzzwords and phrases
we included. In retrospect, the syllabus and
instructions did hint at that style of grading, but
clearer and more specific instructions going
into that portion of the exam would have been
helpful. 0 Strongly agre

I believe that the instructor does a more than

satisfactory job at instructing this course. 0 Strongly agre
I don't see any areas in which the instructor
needs improvement. 0 Strongly agre

I wish Professor Chen would release rubrics

for essays BEFORE we write them, so that
what he is looking for is explicitly stated. Often
we really have no basis of HOW we are going to
be graded and I know I always feel like it's a
crapshoot on whether or not he is going to give
you a good grade or not. 0 Agree

I think that a detailed study guide for the

exams would be very helpful. With that being
said, because the power point slides are
provided online there is little need for a study
guide. 0 Strongly agre
Socratic/lecture switching can be difficult to
follow in class 0 NA/no opinion

Professor Chen can get off topic easily as

many students have hypothetical questions
during class. While these questions can be
interesting, it can also detract from class time. I
would recommend answering only a couple of
those questions and then returning to the
subject matter. 0 Agree
Expectations for essay were a little confusing 0 Strongly agre

I wish that we could at least be able to submit a

legitimate rough draft for a grade, then have
the TA's make revisions and be able to turn in
a final after that just to help with the process of
wriging law 0 Strongly agre
Maybe going over the essays a little more or
providing some previous examples 0 Agree

Teaching Assistants should be more easily

accessed. 0 Strongly agre

Instructor allows for the class to diverge on

tangents that, while usually interesting, do not
further the aims of the course. 0 Agree

I would like to see more use of the Socratic

method so that the class stays on topic more 0 Agree

With the amount of discussion we do in class,

it's easy to get off topic or on a weird tangent.
I would just say cut student hypotheticals short,
or have them talk to you after class about it or
something along those lines. 0 Strongly agre

The instructor often goes off on tangents/lets

students go on lots of tangents and tell
personal stories that take away from class
time. This is a very dense and somewhat
difficult topic so when other students take away
class time to discuss questions that can be e-
mailed or talked about during office hours, I
think its unfair to everyone else in the class. 0 Agree
Grading essays - the rubric of keywords is not
an objective nor comprehensive way of
determining a student's mastery of a topic. 0 Agree

When people raise their hands or talk in class,

occasionally to answer their question you talk
over them. I think it could be beneficial to
those students and others listening, if you
could let them finish their thought before
speaking over them.

A review sheet for the test would be helpful,

or review session the class period before a test
would also be helpful.

For the essay portions of the test, I would

appreciate the checklist we need to write to
be more transparent if possible. 0 Strongly agre
0 Strongly agre

Maybe more visual aid. The powerpoint slides

and writing on the white board is helpful, but
some times it can be hard for me to connect
concepts if it isn't visually shown. The lectures
currently are good, it would just be really
helpful for me if there were more diagrams or
white board demonstrations. 0 Agree,NA/no o
It feels as though we get off topic a lot during
class, and while it is usually an interesting
conversation, it seems to draw time away from
the course material. I've also found it hard to
participate (partly my fault) because there
hasn't been many socratic classes. This was
mostly during the week or two before the first
exam, when we needed to cover the material
on time. 0 Disagree

Although not necessarily a teaching

method/technique, it might be a little less
bothersome, especially outside of class, to try
and send any emails regarding class to be sent
in a single letter.

I thoroughly appreciate your class lectures, and

discussions, but outside of class I can expect an
email from you all to often. 0 Strongly agre
I honestly don't think he has any areas that he
needs to improve in. He's gives very detailed
explanations of whatever topic he is going over
and provides numerous examples, making
particularly hard concepts relatively easy to
comprehend. 0 Strongly agre

Besides pacing (which I mentioned in another

question) there is nothing that comes to mind
that I would like improved. The course is very
good. 0 Strongly agre

The lectures are not as concise as I would

like. I feel like the prof and the students get
sidetracked and waste class time with silly
arguments 0 Disagree

Clearer explanation of grading criteria. 0 Strongly agre

I know that Chen knows the material well, and
has a passion for the law, but he is so scatter
brained at times that it seems like he hasn't
prepared for class at all and it can make it
hard to focus when he goes off on tangents or
forgets what he's trying to say.To be honest,
most of my learning is done outside of the
classroom because I find it hard to engage with
Chen's lecturing. 0 NA/no opinion

I think that providing a rubric for the essay

portion of the exam because there were some
places where you were supposed to restate the
prompt exactly and in the entirety of academia
I have been conditioned to restate in my own
words - so some mixed messages. 0 Strongly agre

I think one way in which he could be more clear

is with the grading rubric for the essay. I don't
think all details of the rubric are necessary but I
think students would benefit from knowing that
what the grading comes down to is the
restatement of facts in the case and how it
relates to law. 0 Strongly agre
Maybe be a bit more concrete in what you want
students raising their hands for. A lot of times
we get pretty off topic and I think you could
manage that better by stopping the tangents
before they start. 0 Strongly agre

There are times where questions are asked

0 Agree

While the class discussion is necessary and

incredibly helpful, it would help improve class
pacing if when going through case studies,
discussion was ended after a shorter amount
of time to make sure that we can indeed get
through the entire case. 0 Agree

0 Strongly Agre
Agree. It seems a lot of class time in the
beginningof class is used to set up
equipment. It may be a better use of class
time to use the time that you are setting up
equipment to simultaneously refresh the class
on what we were discussing last class/what we
will be discussing today. 0 Strongly Agre

I think our class time is pretty balanced but I

would enjoy even more discussion and less
just repeating what's on the slides. 0 Agree

Strongly Agree.

I think that the only way that the class could be

used more efficiently would be to avoid, as
much as possible, some of the arguments and
irrelevant questions about ridiculous
hypothetical scenarios. Although, I
understand that in a class of this nature these
things are exceptionally hard to avoid and can,
on occasion, be useful. 0 Strongly Agre

Agree, instructor does not waste time 0 Agree

(Agree) But, again, I think class time would be

better spent if we spent a little less time
discussing hypotheticals. 0 Agree

Again, I would like to see more use of the

None of the material seems rushed to me. 0 Agree

I said disagree, look to question 8 where I

questions from the class. Not a big deal, just
not productive in terms of content. 0 Agree

0 Strongly Agre
0 Strongly Agre

Less in class discussion that isn't relevant to

the material we are learning, please. 0 Disagree
I disagreed with the former statement. I think
that if we spent less time on topics that sort of
veer away from the topics we're talking about
(cases, slides), that class time would be more
efficient. The conversations are interesting, and
I think they would do better on a canvas
discussion board rather than taking away from
valuable class time. Right before our first exam
felt rushed. 0 NA/no opinion

0 Strongly Agre
I don't feel that he needs to improve in how he
uses his class time. 0 Strongly Agre

I think the pacing could be a bit more

controlled. That said, I loved the topics we
spent time on, it just meant we did not get to
some cases. It's a hard balance, because
discussion helps understand and view the
cases, but the lecturing portions make the law
and readings easier to understand. 0 Strongly Agre

I stronglydisagreed with the previous

question. I feel like the prof's analogies are long
and convoluted. I feel like we should stick to
the slides and sometimes the class discussions
turn into class arguments and waste time 0 Agree

0 Strongly Agre
I indicated strongly disagree. He tries to jam in
too much in the allotted time. By this I mean
that since he doesn't like to let students out,
he'll try to cram in 4 or 5 slides in the last
couple minutes of class just to keep us there
and it's honestly really stressful. On top of that
you don't really get the information that he's
trying to teach because it's coming at you too
fast that it doesn't really resonate. This is
another reason that most of my learning is
done outside of the classroom. 0 NA/no opinion

I said that I strongly agree that class time is

With exception of wrapping up periods of

I think in-class discussion might be improved if

and scenarios which get put forth and don't
relate to the subject matter. There are a few
students who like to hear themselves argue
and can't concede that they are wrong, don't
0 let them go as long. 0

(Agree) Rather than allowing discussions of

hypotheticals to drag on, you could offer a

have us discuss that (or even how that specific

Agree. The Socratic dialogue is helpful in
understanding the material however it tends to
result in unfocused discussions. A hybrid of
0 Socratic and lecture might improve this. 0

I think the discussions are insightful and a lot of

people are able to participate, but there is a
tendency for a few students to sometimes
dominate or derail the discussion with what-if

Agree. There's a pretty wide spread of students

Preventing the same people from monopolizing

the discussions we have on cases, encouraging
more of the shy students to participate, and
guiding the discussion in a direction with an
end. We have some really interesting in class
discussions - but often, there is no end, and
when the discussion does end, it ends on a
topic irrelevant to the topic we originally
0 started to discuss. 0
I put NA/no opinion/don't know. I know that,
personally, I need to start participating in class,
just in general. Sometimes it feels difficult
because the discussion seems fast-paced. I'd
possibly recommend calling on random people
more often, but I don't feel that anyone is being

He doesn't need to improve in this area either.
He's really good at keeping discussions

Perhaps sticking with the same people for

I agreed with the previous statement. I feel like

the prof allows the class to discuss things but it
becomes an argument instead of a discussion

Strongly agre 0 THANK YOU FOR YOUR AWESOME CLASS CHEN!

Compared to the other courses I took, this one
is the most plainly, although it is a difficult law
course, the instructor and his teaching style
Strongly agre 0 make it a lot easier!

Your office hours seem limited... I know we are

Honestly, this is the most interesting and

engaging course that I have ever taken. While
there is no doubt about it that this class is
difficult and will push you to your limit, it is
definitely worth taking and I'm so glad that I
ended up in this course. It has helped me
discover a new passion for the law and inspires
me to work hard and pursue my dreams.
Strongly agre 0 Excellent course!!

Prior to enrolling to this class I was informed by

many students, as well as the professor, that
this will be a difficult class. I found those
warnings appropriate, but, I believe that this
class is is just challenging enough. Every class I
am left pondering the discussions, critiques,
and analysis done by the professor as well as
astute students. I look forward to completing
this quarter and applying the lessons learned in
Strongly agre 0 this class well into my future.
Even though you touch on this in the course
introduction, I think it might be beneficial to, at
the beginning of the course, more heavily
emphasize the difference between a course
such as Intro to Law and a course such as Law
Strongly agre 0 and Society.

I really like Dr. Chen as a person, he is a cool

guy. However, his grading system is frustrating
to say the least. The material is not hard. I
completely grasp all the concepts we talk about
in class, and feel confident in discussing them.
So WHY am I always getting bad grades?
Because the grading is so abitrary, and the
objective tests questions are too long and
poorly written. Assignments need to be less
vague and much more straight forward. My
grades in this class do not at all reflect my
understanding of the material, which is
disappointing as a student who is passionate
Agree 0 about the subject and works hard.

So far, I have thought this course has been

exceptional. I plan to take more courses with
Professor Chen in the future as my schedule
allows. I have 4 more quarters at Western and I
would like to take at least two more courses
Strongly agre 0 with Professor Chen.

I'm really enjoying 311 and I appreciate the

Agree 0 very interesting law course so far!

Like I stated previously, we get off track with

students who present non-relevant information
after someone has already been asked a
question from the Socratic method. I think it
would move class faster as well as make sure
Strongly agre 0 the key points are discussed.

I'm enjoying this class a lot! Thanks Professor

Strongly agre 0 Chen

Honestly I'm not sure the difficulty warning at

the beginning of the course was completely
necessary. But I guess it was wise to make sure
the students enrolled in the course were
invested in it. I don't really have anything of
Strongly agre 0 value to add there.

NA/no opinion 0
I would again like to emphasize my and other
students' disapproval of the format of essay
grading. A list of key phrases does not seem
conducive for comprehensive grading. It limits
the ways in which students may write their
essays, and often leads to scores being
significantly lower than a grade that may be
assigned if graded in another, more objective
Agree 0 format.

There were a few sections from the textbook

which had "?" in terms of the page for the 8th
edition, which was a little off-putting. Although
you do go over them in class, and allow
students to use an older edition of the text
book, I think it would be helpful to update the
comparison chart. If not, then maybe you could
print those sections out; the readings are never
Strongly agre 0 20+ pages, so it does not seem excessive.
His obvious understanding of the topic
immensely aids in his ability to facilitate class
discussions and keeps them relevant and
interesting. One of my favorite features of
taking a class taught by Chen is that he allows
his students to form reasonable
arguments/debates as to whythey should
have gotten better marks on their tests. He
dedicates the class session after the test scores
come in to students who believe they should
have gotten certain answers right (as long as
most of the class had missed that question as
well). Though some may feel as though this is
too lenient (you got the answer wrong which
means you obviously didn't study enough), I
see this as Chen understanding that there
could have been miscommunication during his
lectures, leading his students astray. I also
see it as Chen wanting us to learn how to form
proper arguments (which is important, for it is a
law class), as well as fully understanding why a
student go the answer wrong, or even how he
himself could improve in formingtest
questions. It's a truly unique method that I
haven't experienced in other classes, and it has
not only helped me be able to form proper
arguments and enhance my communication
skills, it helps me remember concepts that
Strongly agre 0 Ihad a particularly hard time with.

I would love to have a course outline, even a

simple list of all the things we'll go over in
class, all the topics of law we will discuss. It's
not a big deal, but having that overview would
Strongly agre 0 be cool.

The essay instructions were a little unclear for

me. I felt like I had completed everything but I
ended up misunderstanding the directions and
that directly affected my grade. I think that the
instructions could have been more clear on the
Agree,Disagr 0 details that needed to be included
Had no idea how the essay(s) would've been
graded while writing it, which made for a much
Agree 0 lower grade than anticipated.
like "this is the hardest class/test you'll take or
essay you'll write." It's like you're playing mind
games and makes me and other students
(because I've talked to others in the class and
they feel the same)second guess everything
we write or read because you make us feel that
we're doing things wrong, when in reality our
first gut instincts turn out to be correct. You
make it seems like it's harder than it actually is
and it distracts us from doing quality.

You sent out an email saying that we could

challenge our essay exam scores, but never
instructed us on how to do so. I feel like your
communication through emails is great, but
unfortunately the substance of your emails
could be greater since more often than not we
the students are left with more questions than
answers after reading your emails.

Finally I would suggest that you double check

your slide with what will be and wont be
covered in the exam so we don't have a repeat
of what happened with our first exam. But if a
slip up happens, which we understand it could,
it would be nice if we didn't get those updates
the day before our exam, as was the case with
our first exam and the slides that were added
Disagree 0 for us to study.

I think this course is better structured and

organized than my last class with Professor
Chen and the expectations are much clearer. I
also appreciate the facilitated appeal process
Chen uses for exams. Really helpful to
