Why is Henry so famous?


1. He was a larger than life character whose
extravagant lifestyle, ruthlessness and
succession of wives have fascinated people
for centuries.

2. During his reign, important political,


economic and religious changes occurred
which have shaped society ever since

When did Henry live?

- He was born in 1491 and reigned from 1509-


1547. He was 17 when he came to the throne and
was king for 37 years, 6 months and 9 days.

- He was part of the Tudor dynasty who ruled


England between 1485 and 1603
What did Henry like doing?

- He liked horse riding, jousting and archery and as


a young man he was very fit and energetic.

- He also liked music and holding feasts at his


palaces including Hampton Court

Henrys six wives

- Henry married his first wife, a Spanish princess


called Katherine of Aragon, in 1511. Katherine and
Henry had a daughter, Mary, who would later grow
up to be queen of England. However, Henry
desperately wanted a son so in 1533 he decided to
divorce Katherine so that he could marry someone
else.
- Henrys second wife was called Anne Boleyn.
They had a daughter, Elizabeth, who was also
destined to become queen. However, Anne didnt
provide Henry with the son that he wanted and she
fell out of favour with him. She was beheaded in
1536.

- After Anne, Henry married Jane Seymour. In


1537, she gave birth to a son, Edward who would
later become king of England after Henry died.
Sadly Jane died only 2 weeks after Edward was
born.

- Anne of Cleves who came from Belgium became


Henrys fourth wife in 1540. He divorced her after 6
months.

- Henry was keen to marry again and Catherine


Howard became his fifth wife. She was 19 and he
was 49 when they married. She was beheaded in
1542.
- Henry sixth wife was Catharine Parr. They
married at Hampton Court Palace in 1543.

The events of Henrys VIII life

1491 - Born at Greenwich on 28 June

1502 - Henry's older brother Prince Arthur, heir to the throne


dies, leaving Henry as the heir.

1509 - Acceded on to the throne on the death of his father


Henry VII, 22 April.
1509 - Crowned : Westminster Abbey, 24 June.

1509 - Married Catherine of Aragon, daughter of the King


and Queen of Spain and Arthur's widow.

1514 - Under the peace treaty with France, Henry's youngest


sister, Mary was married to the King of France, Louis XII.

1515 - Thomas Wolsey becomes Chancellor of England.

1516 - Catherine gives birth to Princess Mary, later Mary I.

1517 - Martin Luther publishes his 95 theses against the


abuses of the Roman Catholic Church.

1518 - The Pope and the kings of England, France, and Spain,
pledge peace in Europe.

1521 - Henry VIII is made Defender of the Faith by the Pope


for being a good Catholic.

1530 - Cardinal Wolsey is accused of high treason, but dies


before he can be brought to trial. His main crime was failing
to secure a divorce for Henry from Catherine of Aragon.

1532 - Henry's marriage to Catherine is annulled.

1533 - Henry marries Anne Boleyn

1534 - Henry VIII forms the 'Church of England'. Henry is


confirmed as 'Supreme Head of the Church of England'
following a parliamentary Act of Supremacy

1535 - Sir Thomas More is executed after refusing to accept


Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England.

1536 - Anne Boleyn is executed for high treason and Henry


marries Jane Seymour.
1537 - Jane Seymour gives birth to Edward (later Edward VI),
but dies after childbirth.

1540 - Henry marries and divorces Anne of Cleves.

1540 - Henry marries Catherine Howard, his fifth wife.

1542 - Catherine is executed for treason.

1543 - Henry marries Catherine Parr, his sixth wife.

1547 - Henry VIII dies, Whitehall, 28 Jan, aged 55

How did Henry VIII reign?

First thing Prince Arthur and Catherine of


Aragon married Prince Arthur died so authurs
father decided for Henrys marriage to
Catherine (March): Henry VII died (April 21st)
so then the marriage between Henry VIII and
Catherine of Aragon was held in (June 11th)
