Chemistry Mol Study Guide

Avogadros Number
-Avogadros Number is the number of atoms in 12 grams of
carbon.
-Its value is 602,213,670,000,000,000,000,000
-Therefore, a 12-g sample of carbon contains
602,213,670,000,000,000,000,000
-The number in scientific notation is 6.0221367x10 23
-We will use 6.02x1023

The Mole
-The mole (mol) is a unit of measure for an amount of chemical
substance
-A mole is Avogadros number of particles, that is 6.02x10 23
particles.
- 1 mol = Avogadros Number = 6.02x1023 unhj its
-We can use the mole relationship to convert between the number
of particles and the mass of a substance
How big is a mole?
-The volume occupied by one mole of softballs would be about the
size of the Earth

Mole Calculations
-We will be using the Dimensional Analysis or Factor Label Method
again
-Recall
-Write down the given (starting) value
-Write down the unit asked for
- Third we apply the unit/conversion factor(s) to convert the
given units to desired units

Mole Calculations I
-How many sodium atoms are in 0.120 mol Na?
-Step 1: We want atoms of Na
-Step 2: We have 0.120 mol Na.
-Step 3: 1 mole K = 6.02x10^23 atoms K
1.25x10^21 atoms K x (1 mol K)/(6.02x10^23 atoms K) =
2.08x10

HOMEWORK!!!
Convert the following
a. 1.29x10^29 Boron Atoms = ? Moles = 214285.7143
b. 7.36x10^24 sodium Atoms = ? Moles = 12.22591362
c. 3.28x10^23 hydrogen Atoms = ? Moles = .5448504983
d. ___ Beryllium atoms in 3.14 mol = 1.89028x10^24
e. ___ Gold atoms in 2.79 mol = 1.67958x10^24
f. ___Oxygen molecules in 4.90 mol = 2.9498^24

Warm up:
.42 moles Na atoms x 6.02x10^23 = 2.53x10^23 Na
Molar Mass
-The atomic mass of any substance expressed in grams (instead
of amu, like on the periodic table) is the molar ass (MM) of that
substance
-Atomic mass of one single atom is 55.85 amu
-Therefore, the molar mass of iron is 55.85 m/mol
-Since oxygen occurs naturally as a diatomic, O2, the molar mass
of oxygen gas is 2 times 16.00 g or 32.00 g/mol
Molar Calculations II
-Now we will use the molar mass of a compound to convert
between grams of a substance and moles or particles of a
substance

Mass-Mole Calculations
-What is the mass of 1.33 moles of titanium, Ti?
1.33 moles Ti x (47.88g Ti)/(1 mole Ti) = 63.68g Ti
2.1x10^26 H20 molecules x 1/6.02x10^23 = 348.8372093
22.4 Liters = 1 mole (gas)
