Maarheeze

Maarheeze is a small village in Cranendonck, province Noord-Brabant. The badge of


Maarheeze exists of a crane made of gold with in his left claw a stone.

The name Maarheeze consists of maar which means swamp and heeze which means
passage. This is because there used to be a swamp on the place where Maarheeze lays
now.

Castle cranendonck
Around 1250 is between Maarheeze and Soerendonk castle cranendonck built. It was
named after the natural environment. kraan as in crane and donkas in hills. Since the
16th century till the end of the ancient regime has the castle belonged to the Oranjes. In
1820 were the oranje goederen sold to Cranendonck and therefore came in
private hands.The castle was destroyed by the French in 1673. The farm beside the castle
was replaced by a villa. In 1938 became the community of Maarheeze owner of the estate
Cranendonck. The villa was adapted and in 1940 used as a city hall. In the begin of the last
century were the parts of the castle above the ground removed. In 1996, because of test
drilling, were there fundamentals of the early castle found. A researcher brought the contours
of the former castle in map. In 2008 were these contours visible in the field.

Clandestine churches
Since 1684, public practice of the roman-catholic religion was forbidden. The churches of
Budel and Maarheeze had to be closed and the reformed community Maarheeze-
Soerendonk, which arose in 1649, existed of only the family of the clergyman , the school
teachers and some separated souls. The clergymen had to leave their community.They fled
to Weert. After 1672 Catholics could built their own churches again as long as they werent
recognizable, this is how clandestine churches arose in Maarheeze.

Gertrudis church
From far away peasants came to the Gertrudis church to get holy water which they would
sprinkle over their harvest or kept it in bottles and hang it in the sheds to keep away rats.
Nowadays there is no massive interest anymore. But there are still some remains left of the
identity of Maarheeze. During carnival the village calls itself Muuzegat. The church is
devoted to Gertrudis van Nijl
The original Gertrudis church of Maarheeze is demolished because people were going to
build a new church. The new church was built by L. de Vries in 1909-1910. The church is

built in Romanesque revival style

Vrijbuiters
On the square of the Vogelsberg is a monument built as a gift from the members of the
resistance De vrijbuiters to the population of Maarheeze because of their help during the
war. Loads of people from Maarheeze risked their lives by helping because if you were
caught for giving shelter you could end up in a concentration camp. The monument
represents the community of Maarheeze, everything is built slant as a sign of insecure times.
The lower part is inserted in the ground and it represents the fallen.

Station
The original station, opened in 1913, had an island platform and laid directly besides the
village. In 1938 the station closed, but the remains from the platform were removed in the
90s. On the 22th of April 2004 the foundation station maarheeze established, a group
inhabitants of maarheeze who sat together for the build of a new station this was important
for the regional function that this station could fulfill to the Poort van brabant;. The new
station was reopened on the 13th of June 2010 the station is moved to the south of the
village, close to industrial area Engelsman.

Mayors
The first mayor of cranendonck we know about was John Jorritsma. The mayor of
Maarheeze from 1 January 1997 - 15 September 2002. Later he became mayor of the
community Eindhoven. His successor was Nellie Jacobs-Aarts, she was mayor from 15
September 2002 - 15 April 2003. After Nellie, Bart Meinema took her place he lasted from 15
April 2003 - 1 January 2012. The mayor now is Marga vermue-vermue.

Problems and solutions


We couldnt really find a lot of information and it took us a long time to find the information
we have now. Because of this, a part of our report is also about Cranendonck. Another
problem is that we often couldnt use a computer, because they werent working or all
computers were taken. So we needed to work a bit harder the other days.
