Algebra I Honors

Syllabus

Course Title: Algebra I Honors

HS Credits: one

Course Description: Algebra 1 continues the study of algebraic concepts. It includes

operations with polynomials and matrices, creation and
application of linear functions and relations, algebraic
representations of geometric relationships, and an introduction
to nonlinear functions. Students will be expected to describe and
translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal
representations of relations and use those representations to
solve problems.

Instructional Approaches: Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators and

application software, will be used regularly for instruction and
assessment. Technology will be used to explore algebraic
concepts and learn to use these concepts in practical mathematic
applications.

Needed Materials

3-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, pencils, laptop, jump-drive,

interactive notebook.

Calculators will be provided for use in class (you may bring

one if you wish).
Course Goals/Competencies: This class is a requirement to graduate. By the end of this course, students will be
prepared to pass the Algebra I End of Course Exam.
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
NC Standard Course of Goal 1: The learner will perform operations with numbers and expressions to solve
Study problems.
Goal 2: The learner will describe geometric figures in the coordinate plane algebraically.
Goal 3: The learner will collect, organize, and interpret data with matrices and linear
models to solve problems.
Goal 4: The learner will use relations and functions to solve problems.

Grading and Evaluation Methods:

Student learning will be assessed in many different ways. Homework will be checked regularly, based on completion or
taken up and graded for accuracy. The interactive notebook will be checked on tests days and will be graded as a test
grade. Tests and quizzes will be given for every unit. It is important to be able to take tests well; the EOC is 25% of your
final grade.
Grading Rubric: Grade Breakdowns:
A 93-100 Tests: 50%
B 85-92 Quizzes: 25%
C 77-84
D 76-70
Class work: 10%
F 69 and below Homework: 15%

EOC: 25% of your FINAL Grade

Make-Up Work:
If you are absent, you will have 5 school days from your first day back to make-up work missed without penalty.

Late Work:
If an assignment is not turned in on time, you will have 5 school days to turn it in. Every day the assignment is late, 10
points are deducted. After the 5 days, the assignment is no longer able to be turned in. This is for all assignments.

Attendance:
Attendance will be taken daily. The attendance policy will follow Craven County’s policy. To be counted present,
students must be in 90% of their class time.

Instructor-specific expectations:

1. Be respectful to everyone in the classroom.

2. Observe all rules in the Student Handbook, ECE & CCC.
3. Be in your seat, ready to learn when its time.
4. Learn from your mistakes and your successes.
5. Keep your notebooks up to date.
6. Do NOT be afraid to ask questions.
7. Participate in class.
