MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Student’s performance is assessed through assignments (60%) and a final

examination (40%).

1. INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT (15%)

INSTRUCTIONS:
i. Each student MUST answer each question by submitting 3 essential points
(about 150 words) in the form of a scientific argument.
ii. In addition to answering the question, each student should also comment, in
the form of a scientific argument, on at least ONE (1) answer put forward by
another student.
iii. Students need to be alert of the due date for each question. Failure to reply
and comment on time will affect your marks.

ONLINE FORUM (MYGURU) – 4 questions – 5 marks each (2 CLO1, 2 CLO3)

Forum 1
Discuss the origin of numbers and its culture. Give relevant examples. (CLO1)
Discussion date: 17 September – 30 September 2019

Forum 2
Discuss the history of mathematical development according to the Greek, Babylon
and Egyptian civilizations. (CLO1)
Discussion date: 1 October – 14 October 2019

Forum 3
Analyze the history of mathematical development according to Islamic, Chinese and
Indian civilizations. (CLO3)
Discussion date: 15 October – 31 October 2019

Forum 4
Analyze the history of medieval mathematical development. (CLO3)
Discussion date: 1 November – 14 November 2019

2. GROUP ASSIGNMENT

INSTRUCTIONS:

i. All assignments are done in groups.

ii. Each group must have 4 students.
iii. Every assignment has to be written in not less than 10 pages (A4) and must
include 5 latest references.
iv. Assignments must be submitted via MyGURU.
v. Late submission will not be accepted.
vi. If you are caught plagiarizing then 50% of your marks will be deducted.

Assignment 2: (15%) (CLO2 – 10%, CLO4 - 5%)

Discuss the contribution of ONE (1) mathematician. (Report writing -10 pages,
Pawtoon 1-3 minutes)

Due Date: 30 November 2019

Assignment 3: (15%) (CLO2 – 10%, CLO4 – 5%)

Plan ONE teaching and learning activity based on the topic chosen and include
relevant historical elements in the chosen activity. Your plan should emphasise on
how to implement the historical elements.

Due Date: 15 December 2019

3. QUIZ: (15%) - (CLO1, CLO3)

Two (2) quizzes will be given online or in class.

FINAL EXAM (40%) – CLO1, CLO2, CLO3

3 essay questions.
