Hero

A hero, in its purest form, can be described as an individual who selflessly

seeks change in a society knowing that change may never arise. In George Orwells

1984 the protagonist, Winston realizes the constant oppression brought upon him

and his fellow citizens of I Oceanias government known as, The Party. In an act of

heroism Winston takes the initiative to stand up against the party for the people

Winston institutes his stand against the party in the form of defiance of the Partys

invocations. This defiance is done in the form of rejecting the party, going against

the party, and directly fighting the party in order to spark a revolution against the

party.

Winstons rejection of the party institutes his uprising. Winston fills the phrase

DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER (18) in an act of protest in his diary. Protest is usually

done by people in rejection of a groups decision. Winston is rejecting the Party in

this way which usually ignites revolution. Most revolutionary leaders are usually

seen as heroes in the eyes of the people. Furthermore, Winstons own acceptance of

his rejection for the party shows his position Theyll shoot me in the back of the

neck I dont care (19). Winston shows his true feelings towards the party in this

quote. His feelings show a step forwards into a revolution. Winston resentment of

the party shows how he may one day be one to create change for society.
Winstons crimes against the party are his first attacks on the party. Winston

deliberately disobeys the partys wishes while referring to Parsons wife as Mrs.

[Which] was a word somewhat discountenanced by the party (20). This

disobedience is done to ignite an uprising in society at least that is the way Winston

perceives it. Winston feels that if he shows his hate for the party others will follow.

Additionally, whenever Winston shows affection to Julia he is also instigating a revolt

as seen when he tells Julia We are the dead (221). His declaration is against the

party but it also seems to be propaganda which is being used against the party. This

Propaganda will start a revolution against the Party. This shows that his crimes will

soon start a revolution against the party.

Winstons direct attacks on the Party are his acts of revolt against the party

this is an offense against the party this is seen in his stubbornness during his

interrogation Four! Four! (250). Acts like this and people who are stubborn like

Winston usually are the people who begin revolutions which is what Winston wants

to do. He wants others to see his passion and follow. Also, OBriens problems with

Winston shows how his intention s are rebellious I am taking trouble with you

(245). Again, Winstons stubbornness is attempting to instigate change. Winstons

actions against the Part provoke an uprising against the Party.

Winston actions and thoughts throughout the novel show how he is trying to

rebel against the party in the form of revolt against the partys actions and the way

that they handle him and the people of Oceania.
