    Chronic ethanol ingestion can lead to liver injury through several pathways. Ethanol is metabolized in the liver, producing toxic byproducts that activate Kupffer cells to release cytokines causing hepatocyte injury. This stimulates stellate cells to excessively deposit extracellular matrix, resulting in fibrosis and cirrhosis over time as liver function and blood flow decrease due to scarring.
