Teacher candidates will be required to keep a log of hours and write a reflection about each
experience.
Two instructional activities that we used which resulted in great success were, Kahoot and BrainPOP
videos. Kahoot is an online assessment, which can be, completed individually, or by challenging someone. I
downloaded the App on my phone and would challenge her, which seemed to always be most effective and
motivating for her. She was also so excited to use Kahoot, especially when being challenged. It didnt seem to
her as if it was a test or quiz because it was super fun and she got to use technology which is always engaging
The BrainPOP videos were definitely one of the more successful tools for introducing and reviewing a
lesson for this student. It is fun and instantly engaging for students to watch the videos rather than hear teachers
or tutors lecture about it. The characters in the videos are what mostly keep her entertained while watching and
learning about a new topic! Its truly an amazing way to introduce lessons along with review them before
moving forward.
Reflections:
Reflect on how your instructional activities, strategies, assessment tools link with the theories of education
presented in your coursework throughout the program.
The first tutoring session we got to know Elaina and understand how she works. We discovered how she
loves working on the floor, taking off her shoes and moving around a lot. Knowing this, we were able to pick a
spot in the hallway with no table or chairs and work with Elaina. We also gave Elaina Howard Gardners
multiple intelligence tests, which lead us to believe she is a visual learner. This is why the Brain POP videos
along with the Kahoot assessments were two very successful activities and assessment tools for this specific
student. Gardner believes that students with the visual-spatial intelligence can be taught best through imagery;
videos and they love to draw and are very good at story telling. These characteristics identify Elainas
personality perfectly. Throughout the tutoring sessions she always asked to draw, work with manipulative and
was always engaged in all the videos and online assessments we completed with her. She always took every
This also ties in with Dunn and Dunn learning style model. The physiological elements include a
perceptual section, auditory, visual, tactual and kinesthetic. Elaina is definitely visual but also tactual and
kinesthetic which all ties in with one another. She loves working with her hands and body, while also taking the
time to watch and learn about a lesson, followed by the drive to jump right in and get involved. Working with
Elaina was definitely a worthwhile experience Ive learned from. Ive always worked with struggling students
or students with autism and learning disabilities, so this was definitely a change. It was interesting to see how
gifted she was and being bale to create lessons to fit her needs was something Im proud to say I succeeded
with.
The second session we focused mainly on sequencing words for the ELA aspect of the tutoring session.
We used Kahoot for the pretest which seemed to be successful as I stated above. She wanted a BrainPop video
on sequencing. Once we were done with this, she started the hard quiz. Toward the end of the lesson she traced
her hand and wrote a different transition word on each finger. She was able to use this a guide moving forward
from here. For the math part of the section we worked on one digit addition and used Kahoot for the pre
assessment.
For the third tutoring session our focus for ELA was for her to continue sequencing words for the
brainstorming stage of the writing process. Instead of Kahoot, this time we used Quizzizz which had 8 questions
for the pre assessment. She read a short passage and had to fill out a graphic organizer about the frogs life
cycle. One thing I really found great that we used throughout the tutoring sessions was ChatterPix. We recorded
her reading and when it was completed it was an image of a frog speaking with her voice. She absolutely loved
it.
For the math portion of the tutoring session we played addition war which was as a great way to get her started.
Two people would flip over two cards each and the person with the higher sum would win the cards.
For the fourth tutoring session we focused on the stages of the writing process. We introduced the first
draft of the writing process with her and worked on creating her own first draft. When she was done we used
ChatterPix again to display her writing piece. The Kahoot was used again for the pre and post assessment. We
played a twister math game for the math segment of the session which was super fun and engaging.
The fifth tutoring session we focused on the edition part of the stages or writing. We helped her edit her
first draft, crossing out words or phrases and fixing it. We only corrected her site words and left hard words that
she sounded out on her own. We gave her a checklist and went back to review and make sure we hit every step.
For the math part of the session she watched a video on subtraction and we taught her the strategy to take away.
We used the large dice, rolling two and subtracting the smaller number for the larger one. This was a fun way to
During the sixth session we worked on her final draft. Once the final draft was one we went over it,
showing her how to check her work. She drew a picture displaying what she wrote about. For the math portion
of the session we begun with addition war and watched another BrainPop video. We played many subtraction
games and used Kahoot for the pre and post assessment.
The last session, we published he completed work and used ChatterPix to tell her story. She took the pre
assessment using Quizzizz and we watched a video about how to write a [paragraph on BrainPop. We threw a
ball to each other and whichever word her left hand landed on, she had to explain that writing process. For the
math section, we played bowling and she had to subtract the number of pins she knocked over from the total
amount. This whole session was a great and fun way to not review what we have been working on with her, but
