Fund-raising Special:
It may excite you to know that Support the Boardwalk
(www.supporttheboardwalk.co.uk) are currently fundraising to enhance the
slashpond and boardwalk with a Bird Hide!
You may recall in last months Community Diary, David, of the Boardwalk
Gang, reported on the variety of feathered visitors to the area Chiff Chaff
on their annual migration from the Mediterranean have heralded the holiday
season with their melodious song from tree tops. A rare sighting of a Cattle
Egret on the Slashpond was a wonderful sight as it rested on its trip around
the county from its home in Southern Iberia and the secretive Water Rail has
made an appearance A pair of Moorhens have decided that this is not a
bad place to bring up their brood of eleven chicks, but the lonely Mallard,
once he found a mate decided to travel elsewhere and we wish them well.
Other summer visitors are making the most of the resources on offer be it
to wash in the pond as with Black-headed gulls or swallows and house
martins feeding on gnats and flies above the water.

Did you know Birds do not recognise humans as predatory threats unless
the human is standing in the open! The hide would provide discrete cover Broad Haven Baptist Church

Welcoming refugees

Since the war in Syria began almost 8 years ago, 5 million Syrians have
been forced to leave their country. A further 6 million have been displaced
within the country. Half of these 11 million are children. The war has left the
country without an infrastructure in many places- no water, no means of
obtaining food and no schools.

Those who choose to leave do so after years of trying to stay. In order to

help Syrian refugee families, the U.K. government has set up a scheme
called Local Community Sponsorship Groups under the auspices of the
Home Office. Under this scheme local people can get together to form such
a group with the aim of rescuing a Syrian refugee family from a refugee
camp and enabling them to start a new life in the U.K. Croeso Hwlffordd is
one such group and consists of local people from the Haverfordwest area.
There are two other such groups in Pembrokeshire Croeso Abergwaun
and Croeso Arberth.

The Home Office in conjunction with UNHCR chooses a family for groups
such as 'Croeso ' and the group is then responsible for finding private rental
accommodation, collecting the family from the airport and helping the family
settle. Some families will have been closer to bombing and atrocities than
other families- we won't know until they arrive. Basically this is a humanitar-
ian cause - people of our town reaching out to help a family that has suffered
the loss of everything, and witnessed unimaginable atrocities in some
cases.

Our efforts so far have been as follows:

Coffee mornings in Crundale, Broad Haven and Uzmaston.
A large party at a private home in Barn Street.
A wonderful concert in St. Marys church in Haverfordwest where the Sir
Thomas Picton school
orchestra, Rosey Cale and Bella Voce ladies choir performed for the charity.
A curry night at the Taj Mahal restaurant in Haverfordwest.

So far we have raised over 6000. Shortly we expect to receive registered

charity status and then we will be able to claim Gift Aid on donations where
appropriate. In the pipeline we have a few events including an Auction of
Promises. Some interesting offers are coming in! If you would like to help,
there are several ways you can:
1. Fundraising by organising an event, which could raise money and aware-
ness.
Contributions for Next Months Diary Contributions for Next Months Diary
by the 20th 10 to: havensdiary@yahoo.co.uk by the 20th 47 to: havensdiary@yahoo.co.uk
2. Do you have anything you could donate to the Auction of promises'? So
far, establishments have offered meals, overnight stays, etc.
3. The group has to deposit 9000 with the Home Office as a measure of
goodwill and raise a further 5000 to cover expenses in the early months of
the family's arrival. That deposit will be returned to the group after
2 years. Hence we are asking for anyone to come forward if they feel they
could contribute to that 9000, and part with some money which they will
get back after 2 years.

If you feel you can help or need more information, please contact us at

these things often manifested themselves in boredom, men suffering in
silence with declining mental health and in the worst cases suicide .While
various groups and charities do exist to support men, it has been proven
that men are unlikely to access and accept support. The Mens Sheds
movement is based on the understanding that men are more likely to help
themselves and attend something they have set up or have some control
over. While they might struggle to talk face to face, men do talk shoulder to
shoulder when engaged in some form of activity or shared task.

There are now over 2000 Mens Sheds in Australia and the idea soon
spread to Ireland with over 200 sheds established in the last four years.
Now the movement has arrived in Wales and, whilst still in its early stages,
The Association of Mens Sheds Cymru is being established to support the
34 existing sheds (June 2017).

If you know someone you feel would enjoy to be a part of this epic and very
unique journey please invite them along to our next meeting.

village hall in Broad Haven. Members were treated to the
exquisite art of the Japanese Tea Ceremony by Yoriko Omae,
which was both beautiful and mesmerising. Members were
invited to taste the green tea that Yoriko had prepared using
Matcha Green Tea powder.

There are no meetings held in July and August.

The next meeting will be Tuesday 12th September in Broad

Dear people of the Havens,

A few weeks ago an open meeting was held in Broad Haven to gauge local
interest in establishing a Men's Shed group in our local area. The meeting
was attended by a number of people who were keen to continue the
conversation and agreed to a second meeting which will take place in Broad
Haven Village Hall on Monday 24th July at 1900. The members of the group
would like to extend a welcome to anyone who wishes to join them in their
pursuit of forming a group here.

Please take a minute to read the following article which hopefully explains
a little more about the Men's Sheds movement.

A Mans shed has, for generations, been a place for him to escape the
stress and strains of life; a safe haven to gain much needed sanity; to be
surrounded by his own, useful things; a place to think, to make things, to
mend things, to invent and be at one with the world..and men the world
over have done this largely on their own.

There is now a new way for men to pursue their interests, develop new
ones, belong to a unique group, feel useful, fulfilled and a sense of
belonging. The Mens Sheds movement has arrived in Wales.

Mens Sheds are social groups or enterprises set up in local communities

for the benefit of men. They are self-governed, self- supported and sustain-
able with a small committee; their own individual constitution, their own
income (should they need it) and eventually their own premises. How each
individual shed looks and the activities that take place in them depend
entirely on the skills and interests of the group. Youd be forgiven for thinking
a mans shed is all about making things out of wood. While many are
wood-working groups there is also a huge array of other activity on offer.
Shedders are artists, collectors, story-tellers, amateur radio enthusiasts,
train spotters, model makers..Anyone is welcome and any interest, skill
or project is given equal consideration especially if it could attract new
members or gain valuable income to support the development of the entire
group.

The idea originated in Australia 11 years ago and was developed by the
health board to tackle growing concerns of social isolation amongst their
male population. They identified that high numbers of men had time on their
hands (due to retirement, unemployment, bereavement, illness etc) and

The Havens Lunch Club
Did you know that every fortnight there is an opportunity for residents in the
Havens to meet for lunch and chat?
Most of us are retired, but anyone is welcome to come along.

Having for several years enjoyed the facilities of Anchor House, with chef Eva,
followed by a short spell at The Glen in Haverfordwest, we are now delighted to
have found a home in the Broad Haven Youth Hostel. (Maybe the name makes
us feel good!) E have received a warm welcome from all the staff, and the dining
room makes a very pleasant setting for our get together.
We meet on alternate Wednesdays at 12.145, and enjoy a substantial 2-course
mea with tea and coffee afterwards. The cost is 8.00, plus a 50p thank you to the
staff.
Please contact Jean on 781 214 for more details and to make a booking.
We look forward to seeing you

The Havens Community Allotments and Gardens
The gardener's dilemma When do you take your holiday? Once again
we thought that we had chosen a good time to go away by travelling
during early June. We planted some crops earlier than usual and others
later so as to avoid produce being ready for picking while we were away.
Neither wanting anything to go to waste, nor to put upon neighbours to
tend the patch. So all sorted; or so we thought. Apart from the vagaries of
the Pembrokeshire weather that is.

The Pak choi bolted and the sweet corn wilted (too dry?), the peas never
germinated (too cold?), the onions went to seed and the potatoes began to
show early signs of blight. Yet everyone said what a wet week we had
missed while away. However the rhubarb recovered from a poor start and
the carrots and beetroot sown from seed caught up on themselves, and the
leeks almost ready to be transplanted once we pick the early spuds.

It was good though to return to our first strawberries of the season as well
enjoying the perpetual lettuce, rocket, chard and spinach at least we got
something right!

Overall we are encouraged, as this is our first season on the new site;
particularly by the fact that the weeds were not as pernicious as feared.
However a neighbouring plot holder did remark - I dont know why they are
called weeds there's nothing weedy about them - they are so tough

Already village folk are beginning to ask about the Haven's Carnival on
July 29th and whether we will be there selling produce as in previous years.
The answer is a reserved yes dependent upon the weather and fruit and veg
cropping at the right time; so look out for us as we continue to support the
Boardwalk in their fundraising. I have already had to decline an advanced
order for blackcurrant's, so first come first served and you will be as
surprised as we are as to what will be available.

One of the holiday failures was the passing of a much loved and cared for
Norwegian Lupin but the acres of wild lupins right across Iceland certainly
compensated for it but how do they survive in such a wild and seemingly
inhospitable terrain when ours just disappeared? Nature will always have
its way and we have to learn to work with it and learn from it it is when we
think we know best that our problems begin!

gives all pre school children the opportunity to
socialise and play, and parents the opportunity
to catch up!

This term we have been covering the theme of Under the Sea , using this
topic to develop the areas of learning represented in the Foundation Phase
curriculum for children.

As we have been running at capacity this term

we would ask that if it is your intention for your
child to start playgroup at any point in the next
academic year that you please register with us
as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Please email broadhavenplaygroup@outlook.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish
all our children who are leaving us to go to
school in September good luck for their next
adventures!

As a registered charity we thank the whole community for their support of

our fundraising activities which ensure the financial future of the playgroup.
We will be holding an End of Term Coffee Morning and Spectacular

MINI BEAST MAYHEM!
For Junes wildlife watch we were learning all
about mini beasts. First, there was quick introduc-
tion to the different groups along with a look at
some real life specimens. Then it was time to go
outside to the woods and find our own! Despite the
not so ideal weather, we managed to find a great
variety snails, centipedes, millipedes, woodlice,
worms, beetles plus more! We even found a toad
(not technically a mini beast but still exciting).
Finally, we built a bug hotel. It was the height of
luxury for our mini beasts, full of leaves and twigs for them
to feed on and hide in. I expect they are moving in already! Finally,
there was an opportunity to get creative and make your own mini beast
to take home as a souvenir.

Join us next month for crabbing on Dale Pontoon.

Who can catch the most? Saturday July 8th 2pm-4pm in Dale village.
Hope to see you there.
