Fund-raising Special:
It may excite you to know that Support the Boardwalk
(www.supporttheboardwalk.co.uk) are currently fundraising to enhance the
slashpond and boardwalk with a Bird Hide!
You may recall in last months Community Diary, David, of the Boardwalk
Gang, reported on the variety of feathered visitors to the area Chiff Chaff
on their annual migration from the Mediterranean have heralded the holiday
season with their melodious song from tree tops. A rare sighting of a Cattle
Egret on the Slashpond was a wonderful sight as it rested on its trip around
the county from its home in Southern Iberia and the secretive Water Rail has
made an appearance A pair of Moorhens have decided that this is not a
bad place to bring up their brood of eleven chicks, but the lonely Mallard,
once he found a mate decided to travel elsewhere and we wish them well.
Other summer visitors are making the most of the resources on offer be it
to wash in the pond as with Black-headed gulls or swallows and house
martins feeding on gnats and flies above the water.
Did you know Birds do not recognise humans as predatory threats unless
the human is standing in the open! The hide would provide discrete cover Broad Haven Baptist Church

Welcoming refugees
Since the war in Syria began almost 8 years ago, 5 million Syrians have
been forced to leave their country. A further 6 million have been displaced
within the country. Half of these 11 million are children. The war has left the
country without an infrastructure in many places- no water, no means of
obtaining food and no schools.
The Home Office in conjunction with UNHCR chooses a family for groups
such as 'Croeso ' and the group is then responsible for finding private rental
accommodation, collecting the family from the airport and helping the family
settle. Some families will have been closer to bombing and atrocities than
other families- we won't know until they arrive. Basically this is a humanitar-
ian cause - people of our town reaching out to help a family that has suffered
the loss of everything, and witnessed unimaginable atrocities in some
cases.

these things often manifested themselves in boredom, men suffering in
silence with declining mental health and in the worst cases suicide .While
various groups and charities do exist to support men, it has been proven
that men are unlikely to access and accept support. The Mens Sheds
movement is based on the understanding that men are more likely to help
themselves and attend something they have set up or have some control
over. While they might struggle to talk face to face, men do talk shoulder to
shoulder when engaged in some form of activity or shared task.
There are now over 2000 Mens Sheds in Australia and the idea soon
spread to Ireland with over 200 sheds established in the last four years.
Now the movement has arrived in Wales and, whilst still in its early stages,
The Association of Mens Sheds Cymru is being established to support the
34 existing sheds (June 2017).
If you know someone you feel would enjoy to be a part of this epic and very
unique journey please invite them along to our next meeting.

Do come along and join us, there is always tea and a warm
welcome.

Dear people of the Havens,
A few weeks ago an open meeting was held in Broad Haven to gauge local
interest in establishing a Men's Shed group in our local area. The meeting
was attended by a number of people who were keen to continue the
conversation and agreed to a second meeting which will take place in Broad
Haven Village Hall on Monday 24th July at 1900. The members of the group
would like to extend a welcome to anyone who wishes to join them in their
pursuit of forming a group here.
Please take a minute to read the following article which hopefully explains
a little more about the Men's Sheds movement.
A Mans shed has, for generations, been a place for him to escape the
stress and strains of life; a safe haven to gain much needed sanity; to be
surrounded by his own, useful things; a place to think, to make things, to
mend things, to invent and be at one with the world..and men the world
over have done this largely on their own.
There is now a new way for men to pursue their interests, develop new
ones, belong to a unique group, feel useful, fulfilled and a sense of
belonging. The Mens Sheds movement has arrived in Wales.
The idea originated in Australia 11 years ago and was developed by the
health board to tackle growing concerns of social isolation amongst their
male population. They identified that high numbers of men had time on their
hands (due to retirement, unemployment, bereavement, illness etc) and

The Havens Lunch Club
Did you know that every fortnight there is an opportunity for residents in the
Havens to meet for lunch and chat?
Most of us are retired, but anyone is welcome to come along.
Having for several years enjoyed the facilities of Anchor House, with chef Eva,
followed by a short spell at The Glen in Haverfordwest, we are now delighted to
have found a home in the Broad Haven Youth Hostel. (Maybe the name makes
us feel good!) E have received a warm welcome from all the staff, and the dining
room makes a very pleasant setting for our get together.
We meet on alternate Wednesdays at 12.145, and enjoy a substantial 2-course
mea with tea and coffee afterwards. The cost is 8.00, plus a 50p thank you to the
staff.
Please contact Jean on 781 214 for more details and to make a booking.
We look forward to seeing you

The Havens Community Allotments and Gardens
The gardener's dilemma When do you take your holiday? Once again
we thought that we had chosen a good time to go away by travelling
during early June. We planted some crops earlier than usual and others
later so as to avoid produce being ready for picking while we were away.
Neither wanting anything to go to waste, nor to put upon neighbours to
tend the patch. So all sorted; or so we thought. Apart from the vagaries of
the Pembrokeshire weather that is.
The Pak choi bolted and the sweet corn wilted (too dry?), the peas never
germinated (too cold?), the onions went to seed and the potatoes began to
show early signs of blight. Yet everyone said what a wet week we had
missed while away. However the rhubarb recovered from a poor start and
the carrots and beetroot sown from seed caught up on themselves, and the
leeks almost ready to be transplanted once we pick the early spuds.
It was good though to return to our first strawberries of the season as well
enjoying the perpetual lettuce, rocket, chard and spinach at least we got
something right!
Overall we are encouraged, as this is our first season on the new site;
particularly by the fact that the weeds were not as pernicious as feared.
However a neighbouring plot holder did remark - I dont know why they are
called weeds there's nothing weedy about them - they are so tough
Already village folk are beginning to ask about the Haven's Carnival on
July 29th and whether we will be there selling produce as in previous years.
The answer is a reserved yes dependent upon the weather and fruit and veg
cropping at the right time; so look out for us as we continue to support the
Boardwalk in their fundraising. I have already had to decline an advanced
order for blackcurrant's, so first come first served and you will be as
surprised as we are as to what will be available.
One of the holiday failures was the passing of a much loved and cared for
Norwegian Lupin but the acres of wild lupins right across Iceland certainly
compensated for it but how do they survive in such a wild and seemingly
inhospitable terrain when ours just disappeared? Nature will always have
its way and we have to learn to work with it and learn from it it is when we
think we know best that our problems begin!

MINI BEAST MAYHEM!
For Junes wildlife watch we were learning all
about mini beasts. First, there was quick introduc-
tion to the different groups along with a look at
some real life specimens. Then it was time to go
outside to the woods and find our own! Despite the
not so ideal weather, we managed to find a great
variety snails, centipedes, millipedes, woodlice,
worms, beetles plus more! We even found a toad
(not technically a mini beast but still exciting).
Finally, we built a bug hotel. It was the height of
luxury for our mini beasts, full of leaves and twigs for them
to feed on and hide in. I expect they are moving in already! Finally,
there was an opportunity to get creative and make your own mini beast
to take home as a souvenir.
