Ansys FORTE

A Simplified tool to simulate the Complex IC Engine

Simulation
About FORTE

Ansys FORTE, IC Engine Simulation code is Powerful tool which can be used to
simulate complex IC Engine flows and Combustion.

FORTE is very simple with respect to the interface and is very powerful in solving the
flows taking place within the IC Engine.
FORTE can be used to simulate combustion reactions in the IC engine by invoking
chemistry.

FORTE coupled with Chemkin (Chemical Kinetics Solver) can Solve Complex Reaction
Models that take place within the Combustion Chamber.
Working environment in Ansys FORTE
FORTE includes the following

Simulate start here to set up and run the model, including selection of a mesh and chemistry data,
specification of engine and model parameters, job execution, and real-time monitoring of runs, as well as
harvesting of results for the ANSYS Forte Visualizer.
Monitor use this to launch a job progress monitor, which allows you to create plots either while the job is
running or after it has completed.
Visualize start here if you have an existing ANSYS Forte solution and wish to focus on interactive
visualization, analysis and/or export of the results. Visualizations include surface contour plots, vector plots,
droplet display, animations, and X-Y line plots of spatially average values, point interpolations, and line
interpolations.

Setting up Analysis in FORTE
Setting up the physics for simulation is made very
simple,

Geometry
There are different topologies available to
create whole new combustion chamber.
Provision to create sector of a combustion
chamber.
Provision to import/export Geometry/Mesh
from/to various other tools in a specific
format.

Mesh Controls
Various Meshing features such as Point,
Surface, Feature, Line refinement options are
available.
Create secondary Volume within the Domain
if necessary
Can generate Solution Adaptive Mesh.

Models
Here we can Invoke Chemistry, from other
chemistry Solvers, utilize Flame Speed
Model to model Combustion phenomenon.
Setup Turbulence parameters, the
Turbulence models Used by Forte are
k-epsilon and RNG k-epsilon Model.
Various other models can be Set-up such as
Spray, Spark, Crevice and Soot Models.
While enabling the above said models,
standard data (theoretical or experimental)
has to be assigned.

Boundary Conditions
All Boundary Conditions pertaining IC
engines are available such as Inlet, Outlet,
Wall, Periodic, Symmetry
Respective moving bodies such as Piston,
Valves etc are assigned to as Walls.
Wall Boundary Condition has Subdivision
where dynamic Boundary conditions can be
assigned.
Valve Profile, Lift Profile etc has to
uploaded in a supported standard format
such as .csv

Initial Conditions
Here well have to specify initial
composition within the domain.
Pressure, Temperature, Turbulence
parameters, Velocity can be assigned.

Simulation Controls
We mention how the simulation has to be
carried out, Crank angle or Time based
simulations are possible.
Chemistry solver enables us to assign
chemistry tolerances, enable species to be
concentrated on during the course of solution
Transport Terms will allow us to give
tolerances for the Solver such as mass,
momentum, pressure, diffusion,TKE etc.

Output Controls
Here we specify how the output Files are
written, i.e specify crank angle interval to
save the output files, restart files and the
spatially averaged chemistry files.
We can also introduce probes of our interest
and monitor them accordingly at specific
intervals.

Preview Simulation
It is a good practise to preview
mesh/boundary motion prior to start of simulation,
to avoid simulation errors in the course of
simulation.

Preview these motion gives us confidence

that the setup is all ready to be started if the preview
is successful and correct the mistakes created if the
preview fails.

Run Simulation
The Simulation can be run accordingly via
Serial or parallel modes,
Start and stop the Simulation.
Launch Monitor window to review the
status.
Launch the Post-processing window to
Visualize results.
Ansys Visualize Window

The Visualize window enables us to view

results in various forms such as

Plots
Contours
Vectors
Animations
Snaps
