Instructions: Use your own paper to write your answer. You can use handwriting or type.

If you
choose to draw your chemical structures by computer programs, make sure you actually draw it,
dont just copy and paste!

Deadline: Friday, May 05th, 2017. Turn in your homework in my mailbox outside of A1.705.

1. Draw the Fischer Projection formulas for Glycine, Aspartate, Leucine, Isoleucine,
Methionine and Threonine. Determine the D/L and R/S configuration of these amino
acids (3 pts).

2. Write the equations for ionic dissociations of Alanine, Glutamic acid, Histidine, Lysine
and Phenylalanine. Label corresponding pKa1, pKa2, etc and write an equation
determining each amino acids corresponding pI (3 pts).

3. Calculate the concentrations of all ionic species in a 0.25 M solution of histidine at pH 2,

pH 6.4, and pH 9.3 (4 pts).
Hint: You need to write all dissociation reactions from Histidine, draw an estimated
titration curve and look up the pKa values of the corresponding dissociating groups in
table 4.1, slide 29. Use Henderson and Hasselbalch equation to calculate the
corresponding ion species concentrations.
