Below is the discussion I had with my principal about families.

I see that you are already making some great strides with parent involvement in
August. What is going to be our current policy and procedures for parent involvement in the
school? Looks like you have a great idea for reaching the "hard-to-reach parents" Any other
ideas you have up your sleeve to improve parent involvement? (This has always been a challenge
for MVE) Since parents are a huge part of the educational team, I want to make them feel
welcomed. I want to encourage families to be welcomed and I did home visits with the PPW last
week to discuss with Pre-K/K families (who had 12 or more absences) the importance of
attendance and to see if they needed any support. At our "Meet the Teacher" night on Monday,
Sept. 11, we will have ELL and tech support to help parents with all the paperwork in the Media
Center.

Reflection
With getting a new principal this year, I think it is vital for the staff and administration to
rally around the new ideas and help the parents feel welcome in the building. With
having a principal that is seen in the building and very open and friendly will help
motivate parents to want to attend the various functions that are going to take place
throughout the school year. There are many new ideas put into place to hope get the
teachers faces out in the community and allow the community a chance to see the
teachers outside the school building and around the community.

Throughout the summer, I had to call parents and give them information about summer
school. The secretary would email me message through the Connect5 computer program to tell
me when there was a parent concern about summer school. I would then call the parents and
discuss the needs they had pertaining to summer school. I also was in close contact with the
parents during dismissal time by letting parents know how the day went for their child. I believe
parents liked hearing the positive news about their childs day before they even got to see
them. I also had to contact a few parents to discuss behavior concerns. The parents were overall
supportive and helpful during the summer school program.
