Pre-Calculus Lesson on Conic Sections

This document is a daily lesson log for a pre-calculus class covering conic sections over 4 days. On day 1, the teacher introduced conic sections and circles. Students practiced finding distances between points and relating this to circles. On day 2, students learned about completing the square and its use in finding standard equations of circles. Students determined standard equations and graphed circles. On day 3, students continued practicing finding standard equations and graphing circles. A crossword puzzle was used for assessment.

B. Motivation n/a n/a Let C=(3,2). Find the distance Apply the concept of completing
between C and the following points: the square to the following
1. 1 = (0,2) binomial:
2. 2 = (3, 1) 1. 2 + 4
3. 3 = (6,2) 2. 2 12
4. 4 = (3,5) 3. 4 2 + 8

equation from the general
equation by using the concept of
completing the square.
D. Examples n/a n/a Determine the standard equation of Determine the center and the
the following circles satisfying the radius of the following circles
following conditions: and draw their graphs:
1. Center at the origin with 1. 2 + 2 6 = 7
radius 4 2. 2 + 2 14 +
2. Center at (4, 3) with 2 = 14
radius 5 3. 16 2 + 16 2 +
