Reactivity Series

When reactions will and wont proceed

Content Objectives
SWBAT predict which chemical reactions will
proceed based on the reactivity series of
metals and halogens.
Will the Reaction Proceed?
When you take two substances that can form
ionic compounds, how do you know if the
reaction will proceed?

It is based on how reactive it is.

Will the Reaction Proceed?
How do you know if a replacement reaction
will occur?

If you place a piece of iron into a copper

sulfate solution, will it react?

Fe + CuSO4 ?? + ??

What about the reverse? Cu + FeSO4 ??

Reactivity Series
It is the order of the reactivity

The more reactive element will

always replace the least
reactive one.

Fe + CuSO4 FeSO4 + Cu

Iron is more reactive, so it will

replace copper
Reactivity Series
Based on the size of the radius and the
electronegativity of the atom.

The metal with the lower electronegativity will

always replace one with higher electronegativity.

The non-metal with the higher electronegativity

will always replace the one one with the lower
electronegativity.
Reactivity Series
Will this reaction go?

Fe + ZnCl2 ?? + ??

No, it wont.
Iron is less reactive, so it will
not replace zinc.
Reactivity Series for Halogens
