Digital Prototyping of Car Body using 3D Laser Scanner

(Project 2)

Project Objective:

Scan a Car Body Profile to create cloud of data for a typical car body
Create a 3D body model using the point cloud data for the sedan
Morph the 3D body model to create a stretched body Model
Create a digital prototype for the morphed structure

Project Description:

The project will collect 2D cloud data in different planes using the 3D scanner in
our laboratory. The 2D data in different planes will be integrated to create a 3D model
for the existing car. These are called Parent Data Once the integrated body model for
the existing car is available, the car shape and form will be morphed to create another
body design (Child Design), called stretched body model or child model. Different child
models will be created for refining body shape and forms. This will help to have different
car body architecture development for future use.

Design Constraints:

Equipment constraints for collecting data are the only constraints

All the minute details of the car body should be captured for further
detailing purposes
Efficient Data Integrity and management for further reproduction
Software and Equipment integration and use
High level of data resolution required

Design and Build Aids:

3D Laser scanner and associated software

Solidworks or Equivalent for structural design and optimization
Virtual Laboratory Facility for real-time visualization and optimization of
movements
