Teaching English using Translation Techniques.

A Case Study

Abstract

Far back in the past, Languages were only taught at the fundamental and secondary schools as
subjects to pass levels. However, nowadays, they are introduced at universities due to globalization
that makes translation necessary in all fields in the world,. More importantly, translation becomes a
specialty-oriented subject that cannot be learned applying the traditional teaching methods. Besides,
when teaching English at university, teachers fulfill the task of designing a course suitable to the
needs and the objectives of the learners. The present paper revolves around my experience as a
teacher at the department of commercial sciences, Khemis Miliana University. .Being required to
design a course impulses me to question the basis upon which I can teach my target learners. To
accomplish this task I conduct multiple means. A diagnostic test is applied to see the students level in
English. Interviews with both students and teachers in the specialty are conducted to know the subject
matters and the skills mostly needed for future professional life. Thus, I find that translation is needed
to be introduced as all students academic subjects are taught in Arabic. It is better for the target
learners to relate English to Arabic language.
