Julin Mauricio Echeverry Meja, director of the Mechanical Engineering program; Sandra
Patricia Jarro Sanabria, director of the Civil Engineering program; and Professor Luis
Carlos Longas Lalinde, traveled to Detroit in the United States to compete for the first time
in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2017, becoming Colombia's first university to be part
of the world's most important vehicle energy efficiency competition.

The eco-friendly car, designed by the students of the University of La Sabana, is composed
of three wheels, two front and one rear, which generates more stability, more power and
improves steering. The chassis is made of aluminum, which makes the vehicle lighter and
more energy efficient. The body of the car is made from fiberglass, which according to its
creators allows it to be easily removed in the event of an accident and its weight is less than
the normal body of a car. And as for the electrical system, the car has a motor powered by a
battery that is connected to a system (transmission) imported from China.
The project supported by the University had a cost of approximately 3,500 dollars.

By last, the participation of the contest was very satisfactory for the students of the
Colombian University since the car managed to surpass the 80 km / h and to be among the
first fifteen of five hundred. They and the rest of the Sabana community hope to return to
take part in the next competition editions.
