Lessons
Dear STUDENTS,
Greetings. Vijay TV Bigg Boss show
appears to have had a great start. Record
number of viewers watched. Kamals
involvement created enough buzz and his
tactful handling of the show kept most of
them engaged. There was enough drama in
the show especially towards the beginning
and audience seems to have enjoyed it.

In one of the Q&A session, a Lady

professed that she and others were using
the show and characters to teach and
learn lessons. This is good and to be
expected from a Social Experiment.

This book is an attempt to crystalize some

of the learnings and present. This is one
persons view. Two people looking at the

Be genuine

1
To be genuine is to do the things you believe in and want to be
accepted for. Theres no need to pretend that you like
something you dont, or something that you are not. You
dont have to try and act tough, or loud, or quiet, if that isnt
how you want to act. Anyone who wont accept you as a
person with a unique personality is someone not worth your
time. E.g. Oviya was thought to be genuine and liked by
inmates as well as general public

4 Bigg Boss University 1

Be original

2
To be original is to do something that has never been done
before, created something that never existed or thought of
something new. Some might think of it as being first the first
presentation, performance or unveiling. Always be a first-rate
version of yourself than a second-rate version of someone else.
Have your views. Agree or disagree respectfully and with
reason. Show who you are. E.g. Suja Initially she appeared to
imitate Oviya and that did not sit well with the inmates as well as
the Public. Ganesh is often thought of as someone without any
views of his own on many matters and piggy backing on others

Add value, make your

3 environment better - be
helpful, Contribute

People who tried to be helpful around the house have always

gotten the benefit in some fashion. Be useful, make your
environment better, look for ways to add value. All these will help
in some way and you will get the recognition or benefit in due
course it could be from others or it could contribute to a high
self-esteem. E.g. Vaiyapuri made morning coffee/tea for so many
including Bindu. Snehan, Gayathri made a difference with their
cooking. Namitha with her cleaning. They were all remembered
and applauded

6 Bigg Boss University 3

Be considerate

Show concern for others. Dont be self-absorbed without regard

for others. People will notice and may start to do the same. E.g.
Ganesh hoarding and consuming eggs and even food in general
with no consideration for others. Pretty much everyone in the
house noticed it and was mentioned during every nomination for
eviction. To this day, he carries the label of being selfish and
could not shred it. Suja is also considered selfish mainly because
of her conviction to win at all costs
7 Bigg Boss University 4
Follow the rules

5
Rules are NOT meant to be
broken sometimes. Be
respectful of others and the
organization that made the
rules. If rules are not
acceptable, go through the
proper channel to protest or
change. World may not like
rule breakers and whiners.
E.g. Raiza sleeping and
questioning why she cannot
do it. She lost the budget for
others. Whenever she got
nominated, this was
mentioned as
a reason.

8 Bigg Boss University 5

Be enthusiastic

6
Enthusiasm can be contagious. It makes life a lot more fun.
Enthusiasm is one of the most attractive qualities to have and
people want to be around you. Enthusiasm gets things done. If you
cannot be enthusiastic in doing something, you should perhaps
quit. E.g. it was always wonderful to see Harathi, Suja, Snehan,
Aarav getting into the tasks. On the other hand, Vaiyapuri and
Raiza were often a drag and boring.

9 Bigg Boss University 6

Focus and avoid

7 distractions

While it may be good to keep your eyes open and grab an

opportunity that was unplanned, there may be situations where
distractions should be avoided. E.g. Arav, Oviya romance. They
went in to play a game show and got distracted with romance. It
hurt both of them though in different ways. They could have
waited to complete the show, get out and re-assess. Even
otherwise, you are there to play a game and audience wants to
watch. Not good when horses go and eat grass amidst a horse
race

10 Bigg Boss University 7

Be a human

8 Be humane

When someone is in trouble, try to help. Dont try to find reasons

and excuses not to help. Excuses could include things such as
they dont need help, they are acting, this person did not
help, why should I etc. e.g. when Bhavani was in trouble, no one
tried to help. It came back to bite most people. On the other
hands, when Julie was hurt, Guys jumped in to help without
overthinking whereas Ladies were hesitating saying that she was
acting. Help first, Think later. Cleverness is a gift. Kindness is a
choice. Make it.

11 Bigg Boss University 8

Dont lie

9 Life is a camera

Just like in the game show, Life has its own Kurum Padam
(mini clips). You will get exposed. Being honest means choosing
not to lie, steal, cheat, or deceive in any way. When we are
honest, we build strength of character that will allow us to be
great. Honest People are blessed with peace of mind and self-
respect and will be trusted by others. People dont like liars. E.g.
Julie and her downfall due to 10 second clip. Even when she
came back the second time, she could not shake it off.

12 Bigg Boss University 9

Be Patient

10 Wait and See

Sometimes, patience and wait & see strategy can work for a
while. Ganesh did not overindulge in anything, minded his own
business, did not make huge waves, was part of everything. He
went under the radar for a while and did not get nominated
because people had others to work on. Sometimes, just being
under the radar, doing the necessary and waiting for others to
make mistakes will carry you through. May not work long term or
all the time. This may have worked for Bindu also.

13 Bigg Boss University 10

Take a stand

11
When you go on for a long time being passive without taking a
stand or making waves, it can get noticed. You cannot be nice
and please everyone all the time. This may not help you achieve
your goal and neither does it help others. Indifference can hurt.
Take a stand when it matters. E.g. Ganesh did not do anything
great, stayed away from disputes and tried to be nice to
everyone. For a while it worked when people were focused on
others. But, after a while, he already was branded and this
perception is hard to change. Many nominations pointed to this
as his weakness

14 Bigg Boss University 11

Think and Act

12
Many a times, mistakes are forgotten. Sometimes, it may not be
forgotten and could have a ripple effect, take a very long time
and can haunt you on many occasions. E.g. Aarav, Oviya matter.
This came into play on many nominations and on many tasks. It
had a ripple effect in getting featured many times and discussed
many times. Aarav just could not shake it off though he was able
to compensate for it with his other strengths

15 Bigg Boss University 12

Dont judge or assume too

13 quickly

Seek to understand first and make a judgment only if you have

to. If someone did not call, dont assume that they dont like
you. May be he lost the phone, someone died whatever
When Suja mentioned that she was scared of Ghosts, some
assumed that she was acting. But, when she backed it up with a
tragedy involving her Sister, the ones who assumed looked silly.
Many such examples inside the house even ones related to
Oviya and Bharani.

16 Bigg Boss University 13

People will forget what you

14 said, what you did but not

how you made them feel

This is a famous quote and there is a lot of truth to it. One

implication is that one should not only focus on WHAT to do but
also on HOW it gets done. When you say something, the way you
say it can really affect how the other person feels. E.g. Gayathri.
So, the actual words may mean less and the effect the tone has
on the other person will matter more. So, be careful in what you
do but also on how you do it. You can convey the harshest fact
and yet make the other person feel good.
17 Bigg Boss University 14
Apologize and Move on

15
Sometimes, it may be good to
apologize early and move on.
Apologizing may not always
denote an acceptance of fault.
Dont let issues linger.
Sometimes, apologizing may be an
effective way to start with a clean
slate. It will save you many
headaches. E.g. Aarav apologized
to Snehan but seemed to have
come a little late. Still it helped.
Vaiyapuri apologized. Even
stronger characters like Gayathri
were moved when Oviya
apologized. It works.

18 Bigg Boss University 15

Keep it real; Dont mix it up

16

When you enter a game, do some justice and play the game.
Dont get caught in mental struggles on relationships, questions
as to whether you are a family or group of friends etc. These are
unnecessary. If you play gracefully, you will maintain the
relationships outside the game. It is not fair for audience to not
see a game with fighting spirit by each. E.g. Many times,
confusion on whether this is a family or game came up. Kamal
and audience expected everyone to play the game and not get
caught up in questions and make it boring
19 Bigg Boss University 16
Favouritism exists

17 Deal with it.

Let us face it. Favouritism exists in this world. Focusing on that

can be a distraction. If opportunity is right, fight against it. If not,
look beyond that and do your best. Dont keep looking for
fairness. Sometimes, you may be wrong in what you think is fair.
E.g. During the show, it seemed as though Kamal (and the general
public) favoured Oviya and overlooked her issues (e.g. stopping
mental hospital game, refusing to clean bathroom every day).
Show appeared to cut some slack for Vaiyapuri. Within the house,
Vaiyapuri seemed to like Bindu and favour her
20 Bigg Boss University 17
Give your best shot. Play

18 and enjoy the game of life.

If you are playing the game, you might as well find ways to enjoy
and give your best shot. Sitting out or half- hearted attempts
dont help you or anyone. Dont overemphasize winning. Winning
can be different for different people. Just play and give your best.
E.g. Oviya left early and still succeeded in making her profile
bigger and getting opportunities. She won in that way. Some may
be there for all 100 days and may not be memorable or benefit
from it. Might as well enjoy. You never know what is in store.

21 Bigg Boss University 18

Dont cross the limit -

19 Watch your words

Never get carried away and spill words that you cannot take
back. There is a limit. It is very tough to get away with words
that cross the line. E.g. Arav talking about Snehan and using
words like dagaldi and putting scene etc. hurt not only
Snehan but also others like Ganesh. Control anger. Never let
words or action get out of control

22 Bigg Boss University 19

Live life; Embrace every

20 moment and enjoy

Sometimes, people forget to live in the present worrying about

the future or repenting the past both of which are of little use.
Then one day, people realize and regret. Enjoy every moment. If
you are doing something, you might as well enjoy it. Be in the
present. E.g. Vaiyapuri realized that he lost time always thinking
about the future and appeared to have forgotten how to live. He
did not seize the moment. His family was wondering about his
attitude at Bigg Boss versus at home. Oviya on the other hand
was enjoying even rain

23 Bigg Boss University 20

Share your problems. But,

21 dont dwell on it forever

It is perfectly ok to share your life and struggles. But, bringing it

up at every opportunity can be tiring to others. Many people feel
that their lives are full of struggles. Though yours may be more
painful, there is a limit to talking about it. E.g. Suja took every
opportunity to bring up her struggles, the fact that her Father left
etc. They are unfortunate events and everyone feels bad. But,
bringing it up every time is a turn off for most. Time to move on

24 Bigg Boss University 21

Intensity to play the game

22 is OK. But, you may need

your social game too

Sometimes, people play the game sincerely and with great

seriousness and this is laudable. However, if the social game is
lagging, this may give the impression that one would play to win
at all costs. You may still win the game but some of the
relationships will fall off because of trust. E.g. People openly
discussed that Suja will go to any extent to win the game. If you
look closely, Snehan was equally intense. However, Snehan has a
slightly better advantage with his social game. Ganesh also plays
hard and his social game is somewhat weak.

25 Bigg Boss University 22

Seize the Opportunity

23
Opportunities dont come knocking the door
very often. When it comes, try to recognize it
and seize it. This is very important. No point in
pointing to the downsides. Instead look at the
positive side. E.g. Vaiyapuri wanting to get out
whereas his family recognized the importance
of him being there for his career. Harish also
wanted to get out and Kamal pointed out that
he should seize the opportunity. Would Harish
get another opportunity to play Bigg Boss?
Probably not

26 Bigg Boss University 23

It is all a game at the end of

24 the day.

This may seem contradicting to the overall philosophy of giving

your best, but it is all a game life is a game. A game that will
end for every one of us. Lesson here is not to say that you
wont play or playing it lightly but taking the results lightly. No
need to take everything to heart after having given a fair shot. It
really does not matter. So, play hard but take the results lightly,
whether positive or negative. E.g. when families visited, people
put the game aside and got emotional. Game is important but
there are more important things in life.
