Born in Africa boasts a total of 385 children in our programme and comprising of primary school, high school
and tertiary students. Offering these students the best possible education and social support is what we do on
a daily basis and taking care of their health issues is a primary concern.
This year, our mentoring programme includes dental, eye and skin care and more. We have already managed
to complete dental and eye sessions and what brilliant outcomes we have had. In the beginning of the year
our Born in Africa Meetjiesland team joined us for a month and conducted the first initial eye tests of all our
children. This was done using an eye test kit offered to us by Spec Savers, a South African eye care franchise.
They also trained our Meetjiesland experts on how to conduct the testing. After school appointments were
made for the 39 candidates and a total of 31 students required glasses. This just goes to show what a brilliant
job our Meetjiesland team did with the initial testing! We are most grateful to our sponsors Soroptimist
International Gent Scaldiys and the UK supporters of Born in Africa for assisting us with this project and a
huge thanks to Spec Savers for their excellent service.
Visiting the dentist is perhaps a little more terrifying than having your eyes tested and for this reason a fierce
dental campaign was presented by our Born in Africa mentors. They were taught the oral anatomy, taking care
of ones teeth and educated about which foods are beneficial for a healthy smile and daily good dental habits.
Each child in the Born in Africa programme were given a toothbrush and toothpaste and many teeth brushing
sessions followed! We would like to extend a special bright smiley thank you to the sponsor of the Dental Care
project, Uncle Harry. As they say, Better teeth, better health!
Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role models
in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and young adults
from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay South Africa.
