How do the foreign language learners especially Javanese face linguistic and culture

problem?

Every language is unique because of the expressions related to the grammatical and
cultural in every country. The basic grammatical of English and Indonesian are also different,
it influenced by the culture of both country are different especially in Indonesia. Indonesia is
a country which has many kind of culture in each regional, moreover in Java. Javanese
people has different perspective about their language. It is very interesting to understand the
comparison of those languages, not only the lexical of each words but also the sentences. In
java there are some levels of the style, such as ngoko, madya, and kromo, where as in English
are low form, mid form and high form. They have differences of lexical categories, thus make
the grammatical in sentences are also different, so the writer raised the great question about
it; How do the foreign language learners especially Javanese face linguistic and culture
problem? the answer can be find from the simple example; Eat now becomes dahar
sameniko in high form/ kromo inggil, nedo sakniki in middle form/ kromo madya.
When the native speaker of English speaks Javanese, phonic interference will be one
contribution to lead misunderstanding. For instance, when a Javanese friend of mine say to
one of Australian student Jess, mentegane nang kotakan abis? (Jess, the butter in the box is
finished). For the lack of aspiration, Australian student (Jessica) heard it as Jess, merdeka za
nang katokan abis? (Jess, the independence in pants is finished). This interference may be
that the English word pronounced by the Javanese will not mean anything at all for the native
speaker of English, and only through some supplementary devices such as repetition,
spelling, circumlocution, and the like, will the word be understood at all.
For instance, the explanation above give some effects in our language perspective
about Javanese and English these are politeness and one of linguistic competence such as
grammar and speaking. While Indonesian students sometimes confused with some
expressions of using in daily conversation which includes Indonesian but sometimes it
doesnt use in English. The greeting expressions based on their understanding is have a nice
day and have fun, it is expressed in English but it doesnt expressed in Indonesian especially
in Javanese language. Many aspects which influenced the language understanding, so the
teacher should give the information not only about the language but also the culture of that
language that the students are studied.
