How To Write a Composition

1) Read the instructions carefully and double check


you understand all you have to do.
Do I understand all the words? Do I have to write in the present, the
past or the future?

2) Plan your composition in advance. Brainstorming:

- Structure your composition. Think about what are you going to


include.
- Try to use the vocabulary you have learnt in the unit. (Including
idioms).
- Use a dictionary to find more words (Remember that verbs are in the
base form, you may need to change them).

3) Write a draft of your composition on scrap paper.

- Use your brainstorming to write sentences for your story


- Look up words in the dictionary if you need to include new words.
- Use proper punctuation (commas, full stops) and linking words to
join your sentences.

Sam was five years old. He had black hair and blue eyes. His parents picked him up at school the day
before and told him that they were going to the zoo! Sam was very excited.

On Saturday morning they woke up and went to the zoo. It was a hot and sunny day. The animals
were organised in different areas depending on the countries they were coming from. Sam was
deeply impressed by the colourful birds and exotic animals that were in the cages. He had never
seen something so beautiful before.

After the tour through the America continent, Sam wanted to feed the elephants. The place was
crowded with people and he thought he might not have room to do it if he didnt hurry. He took some

mistakes. Underline your mistakes and correct
them.

- Look at the verb tenses (if you are writing a story in the past, check
you have used the past tense with all your verbs)
- Read it all through. Does your story make sense?
5) Give the composition to a classmate and tell
him/her to correct it.

6) Correct your mistakes and check that your work is


neat and tidy. Draw a small picture.
