Differentiation using money ice-creams:

Extract from lesson plan:

High ability students to use the full range of Australian coins,

encouraged to use multiples of each coin type.

Medium ability students to use all coin types except 5c, and encouraged
to use multiples of each coin they use.

Low ability students to use one coin per scoop of ice-cream only, no 5c
coins and multiples of $1 or 50c only.

Students were guided by the teacher to cut out appropriate coin collections. No $2 coins were utilised
to prevent creating an unrealistic price for the ice-creams. The differentiation worked well in that
each group of students could complete the task independently or with little help, each student was
given flexibility to increase the complexity of the task if they felt comfortable, and each student
produced a piece of artwork that, as part of a classroom display, did not overtly show the ability level
of the student that created it.
