MAPPING THE HANNAFIN-PECK MODEL TO ADDIE 2

ADDIE is an acronym for the major processes of Instructional Systems Design: Analysis,

Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation (Molenda, 2003).

Analysis: Defines the instructional problems and objectives, and identifies the learning

environment and learner's existing knowledge and skills.

Design: States learning objectives, assessment instruments, exercises, content, subject

matter analysis, lesson planning, and media selection.

Development: Assembly of content assets.

Evaluation: Including formative evaluation at every step and summative evaluation on

the finished product.

Analyze

Implement Evaluate Design

Develop

The Hannafin-Peck Model

Introduced in 1987, the Hannafin-Peck Model involves three essential stages that are each

followed by a thorough evaluation and revision process.

Assessment: This first stage of the process consists of a thorough needs analysis.

Including learner needs, goals, performance gaps and organizational needs. Develop objectives

and start thinking about activities and resources that will help to achieve them most effectively. It

also requires one to create reasonable goals (Sortrakul & Denphaisarn, 2009).

Design: Create a storyboard or outline that highlights the online exercises, multimedia

components, and assessments that will be used. Work with Subject Matter Experts to develop a

list of key takeaways. Gather resources and materials that help to fill the performance gaps and

fulfill the needs and wants of the learners. A user control of the screen design prevents the

instructional process from becoming tedious and monotonous (Hannafin & Peck, 2011)

Development & Implementation: Upload the program to LMS, maintain and update it on

a regular basis to meet the ever-changing needs of the learners. Proofread and edit the content,

test it and provide instructions.

As one can see on the following image, evaluation and revision is a constant

phenomenon.

Comparing ADDIE to the Hannafin-Peck Model:

ADDIE Stages in the Comparison

Stages Hannafin-Peck Model
Analyze Needs Assessment The name of the first stage is different but both models
focus on performing an initial needs assessment with
problem definition, organizational and learner goals
and objectives.
Design Design ADDIE is concerned with Literature Review,
Objectives, Test instruments, Delivery and media
decisions, Instructional strategies and activities. The
Hannafin-Peck model goes straight into storyboarding,
media content and assessments.
Develop Develop Both models handle the development plan and
Implement Implement implementation at the same time, the Hannafin-Peck
model has this two steps perhaps more consistently
merged than the ADDIE model. Both mention the
selection of staff or instructors to offer assistance.
Evaluate Evaluate and Revision Despite being the last step, both models concur in the
idea of constant evaluation along the ISD process.
