OBJECTIVE & SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP
Although embedded systems are generally defined as special-
purpose computer-systems designed to perform one or more dedicated
functions, usually with real-time constraints, and have computer
hardware and software embedded as parts of a complete device or
system, they range from simple portable devices to sophisticated multi-
board stationary systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering of
IIT Roorkee (formerly University of Roorkee) has been a pioneer in
education, research and training on Embedded Systems since 1976. The
first Ph.D. on microprocessor applications (possibly the first one in India)
was done in this department during 1976-1980. This was one of the 8
institutions in the country to start training and research in microprocessor
applications in 1983 under a national programme of MHRD and set up
“Centre for Microprocessor Applications” in 1984. More than 20 Ph.Ds
have been awarded and about 200 B.Tech/M.Tech. projects/dissertations
have been completed on Embedded Systems. Many Embedded Systems
have been developed for industry/real-time applications. During the last
few years, research has gradually been shifting to cover newer areas of
FPGAs, FPGA-based embedded systems, reconfigurable-architecture
embedded systems, IP processor-cores and other IP cores.
With its long and rich experience in R&D and training on
Embedded Systems, the Department of Electrical Engineering has
decided to hold a workshop on this subject. The objectives of the
workshop are many-fold: It is proposed to take stock of the developments
and industrial activities in this field, including various embedded
processors, hardware architectures, embedded software architectures,
hardware and software development platforms and tools. The workshop
will highlight the recent R&D trends.
The workshop will deliberate on the excellent employment
market for the graduates (of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and CSE
disciplines) both in India and world over. Experts from academia as well
as industry are expected to contribute strongly as resource persons.
Through panel discussions, the workshop will endeavour to prepare
models of (a) Instruction Laboratory, (b) R&D Laboratory , (c) Basic
Course, (d) Advance Course, with a view to ensure preparedness of the
engineering graduates leaving our educational institutes to meet the
market expectations and strengthen the position of the country as a hub of
R&D on Embedded Systems.
Presentations and demonstration of the hardware/software
development platforms and tools by some vendors have also been
arranged on this occasion.
ABOUT IIT ROORKEE
IIT Roorkee became the seventh IIT of the country when 21st
September, 2001 the prestigious University of Roorkee was converted
into an IIT. Founded as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847,
this temple of learning, the oldest engineering institution in Asia and the
first one in the then British Empire, is now 160 years old. The Institute
offers 11 undergraduate courses in Engineering and Architecture and 51
postgraduate courses in different disciplines of Engineering, Architecture,
Management and Sciences alongwith 5 Integrated Dual Degree, 3
Integrated M.Tech. and 3 Integrated M.Sc. programmes. Ph.D.
programmes are conducted in all disciplines.
IIT Roorkee possesses a unique environment congenial for
research and development activities and the faculty has expertise in
almost all the major fields of engineering and sciences. The Institute has
18 academic departments, one academic centre and 3 centres of
excellence. Modern centralized facilities exist at the Institute, including a
Computer Centre, Information Super-Highway Centre and
Instrumentation Centre. The Institute’s Central Library and the libraries
of several national institutes located at Roorkee provide priceless
technical literature, seldom available at any other engineering centre in
the country.
ABOUT ROORKEE
Roorkee is a part of the State of Uttarakhand and is located at the
foothills of Himalayas. Roorkee Railway Station is on the main line of
Northern Railways having direct links to Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta,
Amritsar, Jodhpur and Shri Ganganagar. The place is also within easy
reach by road from Delhi (200 km) and Chandigarh (180 km). It is
located on Delhi – Haridwar and Delhi – Dehradun bus routes. Roorkee
is ideally located near several tourist places, like Dehradun (70 km),
Mussorie (100 km), Haridwar (32 km) and Rishikesh (50 km). Roorkee is
very cool in the first half of the January month and, therefore, the
participants are requested to come with heavy woolen clothes.
