First Week of School

Day 1: What is a scientist?


Break up into small groups, and each group will brainstorm what they
think a Scientist is.
Come together as a class, and make a class poster for what a
scientist is.
TEKS: 5.3: The student uses critical thinking and scientific
problem solving to make informed decisions.
Day 2: The Scientific Method
Go over a power point for what the scientific method is
Have a graphic organizer ready for students to write notes in.
Come back as a class and discuss why the Scientific method is
important
TEKS: 5.3A: In all fields of science, analyze, evaluate, and
critique scientific explanations by using empirical evidence,
logical reasoning, and experimental and observational testing,
including examining all sides of scientific evidence of those
scientific explanations, so as to encourage critical thinking by
the student.
Day 3: Lab equipment
Take a tour of the Science lab
Show example of the equipment we will be using during the year
Have them write down three lab tools we will be using this school
year
TEKS 5.4A: Collect, record, and analyze information using
tools, including calculators, microscopes, cameras, computers,
hand lenses, metric rulers, Celsius thermometers, prisms,
mirrors, pan balances, triple beam balances, spring scales,
graduated cylinders, beakers, hot plates, meter sticks, magnets,
collecting nets, and notebooks; timing devices, including clocks
and stopwatches.
Day 4: Lab Safety
Go over a power point for lab safety
Have students complete a graphic organizer for the rules of the lab
TEKS 5.4B: Use safety equipment, including safety goggles
and gloves.
Day 5: Lab Safety Continued
As a class, create a poster for the rules of the lab, and display it in the
classroom for it to live for the whole school year.
