DESIGN METHODOLOGY:
Limit state design method is adopted for the design of the structure. In this method, each
member of the structure is designed to satisfy Serviceability criteria, and ultimate collapse
criteria. This ensures satisfactory Behavior and low probability of failure.
Section 5 of I.S. 456-2000 has given clear guidelines for Limit state method of design. The
same design is adopted with the suggested Characteristic loads of I.S 875-1964.
FRAMING PLAN
Taking Architectural plan as base, the column positions are decided to provide proper
structural frame without disturbing the parking plan. Column orientation is taken to provide
maximum rigidity along spans and also proper Resistance to lateral (wind& earthquake)
loads.
Separate Columns are considered for Staircases and Shear walls considered for Lifts, So as
to simplify the structure and ensure extra terrace structure for these utilities.
Loads from slabs are transferred to the supporting beams and from beam to columns in each
floor. Wind loads earthquake loads are considered at preliminary analysis and design.
However wind loads are not critical, hence earthquake design considered for final analysis
and design as per the code provisions.
STADD-PRO Software is used for vertical load and horizontal load analysis considering as
space frame; the analysis and design results are noted and checked.
For the design of columns and beams results taken from soft ware and the designs of
columns and beams decided accordingly.
Software is used at each stage of design process. Apart from Stadd- pro Design of footings
and slabs are done as per the standard methods.
However for the safety and reliability, Manual method of design also adopted for the typical
members to cross check. Excel sheets are also used for cross checking on the designs of
footings.
LOAD CALCULATIONS
Dead load:
= 11.40 KN/m
Perapet wall load = 0.23 x 0.9 x 19
= 4.0 KN/m

STAADPRO SOFTWARE:
Staad-pro/ISDS software is used for frame analysis. The soft ware is based on stiffness
matrix method. The soft ware can be used for 2D & 3D analysis. However, for analysis is
adjusted for 2D& 3D analysis is used.
INPUTDATA:
The building is considered to be located in seismic zone III and intended for Commercial
use. The building is founded on medium strength soil through isolated footings under the
columns. To show the effect of soil flexibility, the modulus of surged reaction of soil is
taken as 400 KN/m2. The unity weight of concrete and masonry are taken as 25 KN/m 2 and
19 KN/m2
