Personal Essay
Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a
different prompt, or one of your own design.
What colour is that ? is a question often heard, if you are colour blind. You eventually get sick of this question
because this question follows, immediately after a person comes to know that you have colour blindness.

Initially, I was told that I was affected with colour blindness in my pre-school days. My teacher knew it right away. I
used to colour grass with orange, when I told to colour it with green. To
avoid such mistakes, I started purchasing crayons with names of the stick. This got difficult when the crayons
became worn down and I could no longer read the name of the colours.
Even though I had trouble identifying colours, since my childhood days, I never really believed
that I was colour blind -the term seemed too extreme to me as I was able to see different colours in my day to day
life; the world wasn't black and white to me either.

When I was 9, my dad took me to the eye clinic to test my vision. The doctor conducted the Ishihara test(The
Ishihara test is a color perception test for red-green color deficiencies!)The test consists of a number of colored
plates, called Ishihara plates, each of which contains a circle of dots appearing randomized in color and size. In
the pattern, there are dots which form a number or shape clearly visible to those with normal color vision, and
invisible, or difficult to see, to those with red-green color deficiency. Other plates are intentionally designed to
reveal numbers only to those with a red/green color vision deficiency, and be invisible to those with normal
red/green color vision. I couldn't pass the test and the doctor proclaimed that I have deuteranopia(Red -green
colour blindness).

It took me a long time before I could accept the fact that I had restrictive colour vision. I later realised that this
disability isnt disability but merely a deficiency. It is not that I couldn't see colours but it is just that I cannot
perceive certain shades as accurately as others could. Anyway, I was not planning to become a fashion designer
or a graphic designer or a pilot, therefore, it made little sense if I could perceive certain shades or not. Thus, this
deficiency cannot affect major aspects of my life, though some minor aspects in my daily life would definitely be
affected. Like-

1)Traffic lights-Red and Yellow look exactly the same and people with this deficiency are not permitted to obtain a
driving license in India.

2)Purchasing clothing- Sometimes when I intend to buy clothes of these colours, I take a liking to, I would need
some assistance to choose as these colours would look weird. I wonder if they look at a different colour than the
colour I see .

3)Observations in daily life - I am never fascinated by the various colours used in paintings that are mesmerizing.
Once my friend asked me to buy some beautiful red flowers to gift his mom, but I couldn't find them in the whole
market; but there were plenty of orange roses everywhere I went.

I can always place a colour in a specific section of the spectrum.

For example, If I am unable to identify a shade I narrow it down to two or three colours. Then I try to compare it
with similar colours in the surroundings and accurately identify the colours. I still see the sunsets and enjoy every
colour in the rainbow. It is just that I don't see some colours as brightly as others do.

Colour blindness makes me feel unique as I have accepted its role in my life. I accepted that I see the world
differently as others cant. It amuses me when people tell that they wish to be colourblind for a day. To all the
colourblind people in this world,"You are one in a hundred and You are unique.

Beyond rankings, location, and athletics, why are you interested in attending Georgia Tech?
Georgia tech attracted me with its high reputation for engineering. Yet,what interests me more is the unique and
innovative method in which Georgia tech intends to impart quality education to aspiring engineers. Like-Vertically
Integrated Projects that challenge our ability to innovate and push us beyond our limits, greatly enhancing our
knowledge in the process.

The startup labs in Georgia tech are a great opportunity for aspiring computer scientists like me to showcase their
knowledge to the outside world. With 60+ culturally diverse student organizations, Georgia tech would allow me to
mingle with people from different countries and diverse cultures allowing me to know more about the diversity of
the world. The student clubs and sports facilities provided by Georgia tech would greatly enrich my college life. I
believe it is the only place with such combinations of the above mentioned facilities.
Essay Topic We challenge our students to 'be comfortable being uncomfortable'. Tell us about a time
in high school that you felt outside of your comfort zone and the resolution.
Essay Answer
Anger was my worst enemy in the first half of my high school life. I used to get into fights frequently for petty
reasons, yell at my friends, blurt curses whenever my team didn't perform well in sports. Even though I had
some good friends, I was shunned by many of my classmates. Anger messed up half my high school
life; I realized quite early that I had to do something about it. Anger suppression wasn't a remedy: I had to get rid of
it.

It used several methods to combat it. With rigorous exercise and relaxation methods, I calmed general stress
levels. Running, walking, swimming, yoga and meditation are just a few activities that can reduce stress. Playing
music actually helped me the most when to vent out my stress levels. These strategies worked effectively and I
was able to get rid of anger for good.
